Dark S1 is really just a crash course in how the world of Dark operates. It's sole purpose is to prepare you for the complete mind fuckery of S2 and 3! Jimmy, invest in some earbuds, they'll keep your brain from leaking out your ears when your brain melts in S2 and 3.

Your right, it is very depressing early , but I think that is probably to give characters the eventual drive and justification to make irrational, insane, and importantly, kind of fun decisions like Ulrich attempting to beat a kid to death
