2021-07-11 00:28:08 Roku washed Sozen and just to make sure him and anyone within sight of the palace didn't forget who was really in charge, destroyed his whole throne building for good measure. Good shit. The Sozen flipflop is super abrupt, but after so many viewings my take/interpretation is that his gut instinct - his emotional response - was to save his friend, but then visibly seeing this unbeatable obstacle actually near death made the cold, calculating part of his brain seize on the opportunity. The way his last will & testament opens with him saying darkness was closing on him and calling his youth with Roku "brighter" definitely implies he died with at least some regrets. The Beach is such a funny quotable episode and does such a great job fleshing out all 4 of those characters, even Zuko who was pretty fleshed out as a main character already. Plus, "tri-clops" fight! I love the effect of the delayed sound from his burst explosions, it really makes them feel dangerous and concussive. Also, look at how badass our crew was, even defeated, in the initial defense! Far cry from when we met them. And yes, Zuko is introduced in ep 1 but they don't meet til 2.
