We start the road to Vengeance Jimmy, after the rise of Spartacus in Blood & Sand and the House of Batiatus in Gods of the Arena, we see the aftermath. The season was filmed two years after the first, because of Andy Whitfield's cancer, which led to the prequel to tide the fans over.

When Vengeance was set to be filmed, Andy's cancer which was in remission returned, so he had to leave the series for good. He gave his blessing for Liam McIntyre to take his place as Spartacus, and then he passed away 11 months later, RIP Andy Whitfield. Liam only had a few months to train for the role, which is why he doesn't look as buff as Andy did.

He eventually gets that Gladiator body later on, but things were rushed getting the season done for the release back in 2012. To the episode, Liam's portrayal of Spartacus is more bold and daring, he is now the leader of the slave rebellion that will become legend. Andy's portrayal was a man who life is torn apart, loses everything and slowly builds it together again, more contemplative and hopeful than the vengeful warrior he becomes.

Spartacus and Crixus work together somewhat unsteady, but they have found common cause and trust in each other. Which is why Crixus is pissed when Spartacus tells him to exercise caution in going after Naevia, while he makes a foolhardy attempt on Glaber's life. Spartacus does not practice what he preached, it costs him not only in letting Glaber escape, but his actions in drawing him to Capua condemn Aurelia to a tragic fate. Like his wife said, he destined for great and unfortunate things.

Aurelia's death after Diona's death in Gods of the Arena, is excessive but it does show that acts of kindness rarely go unpunished in this world. Failing to protect her as he promised Varro only serves to harden his resolve to see Glaber and all of Rome pay for all of these tragedies. Glaber now takes center stage as the show's villain, he and Spartacus are bound to each other and both want the other dead real bad. He has to clean up the mess that his wife caused, which has fallen on him, not to mention others looking to usurp his position like Varinius and Seppius, so of course he has no problem dragging Illthyia back to the last place she wants to be, but he suffers so shall she.

The biggest twist of course is Lucretia, she's alive if mentally scarred from her horrific ordeal. How she survived is a mystery, which will be very enjoyable to see you discover. The odds once again turn in Illthyia's favour, as she holds the power again in her and Lucretia's relationship, though you never should underestimate her, she is far more dangerous than anyone realizes. Oenomaus is now bereft without the ludus and his guilt in being party to the destruction of the House of Batiatus. He does sympathize with the gladiator's plight, but can't embrace it. Also seeing him in action is always a joy, a warrior equal to Spartacus, Crixus or Gannicus.

The fights outside the arena only get better, the attack on Arminius' brothel is a great reintroduction to the blood soaked mayhem the show is known for with naked men and women running for their lives while blood flies. Agron is a hot head whose grief over his brother only makes him more aggressive and problematic, he really doesn't Gauls. Anyway I have gone on enough, thanks for the reaction Jimmy, faster than I expected, looking forward to you seeing the rest of Vengeance, take care and peace.

As evident in this episode, Spartacus has much to learn about being a leader. At least his heart is in the right place, but his head needs to catch up! Lucretia was a massive surprise for me when first watching. I was pretty happy to see one of the wicked duo alive. Also of lesser note, Crixus retains his development and is actually the reasonable one as he was when he decided to side with Spartacus in the great moment in season 1.

Its been a while since I've watched this season. So it was a great solid episode to return on. had a little bit of everything. My highlight of the episode is the fight in the market. Finding ways to have your protagonist and antagonist be face to face and get away without one of them dying, that is believable is a good sign of good writing in my opinion. A lot of times I see that happen, and I'm here asking, why did they not kill each other.

I feel the need to say this otherwise you wil just be confused later the actress who played navia was also replaced if you didn’t know jimmy i think the reason is she wanted to do another series instead

NexX

While i love both the actors i personally enjoyed liams portrayal of spartacus more than andy

Cadmus Lochlan

I've seen a lot of people prefer Andy, but same, I like Liam's version better.
