Absolutely for me this performance for Mason is much better than in S2. I actually didn't have a major problem with S2 Mason but there's a subtle menace in S3 Mason sometimes that really works for me. That scene where Will finds Hannibal in the museum is wonderful. If this wasn't this show and these characters, it would almost read like two friends meeting after a long time apart...and that's exactly how Hannibal and Will think of it in a lot of ways. Except the last time they saw each other in person, Hannibal had just gutted Will and slit Abigail's throat after stabbing Jack in the neck. Also, Hannibal taking a bone saw to Will's head fully intent on eating his brain was WILD!!! They really took pity on us by not making that the cliff hanger and instead showing that Hannibal was somehow interrupted and Will was saved. That kaleidoscope sex scene!!! Hannibal never has normal sex scenes so I couldn't be surprised by it. I mean who can forget the 5-way dream orgy with Will, Hannibal, Margot, Alana, and the Stagman? lmfao Some people don't like the beginning of this season but I actually love the arthouse surrealism that makes you feel like you're in a psychedelic dream. That's exactly how both Will and Hannibal feel after their violent encounter in the end of S2 where both of them feel like the other person betrayed them and they're both simultaneously heartbroken, enraged, lonely, and murderous. All they can do is think about the other and wander aimlessly through their lives.

Hahaha between the "spitters are quitters" line last episode and the lesbian kaleidoscope scissoring this episode it was abundantly clear Bryan Fuller was done giving any fucks about what the network cared about, and that no one from the FCC was checking these episodes before they aired. Later events and dialogue further confirmed that. I also love all of the extended artistic imagery on full display. The transitions in this episode when Will is drugged after getting shot and ends seated at the table are sublime. I'll never forget the night this episode aired, just losing my shit at everything that was happening. Had they ended the episode with the blood drop reflection transition and fade to black I would have gone crazy. So glad they showed them hanging upside down even though that lead to more questions. Reusing the shot of the clouds that were in the S2 finale credits was a nice little clue and callback that there was some form of travel back to the US though. Jumping into the back half of this season is going to be a jarring shock on the system, but Digestivo before that. I love this bloody show.
