Carter saving Elias. That's just fucking awesome 😎😎 well...she obviously thinks that the russians are worse than Elias. So she doesn't want them to win.

But is Root really crazy? The Machine means a lot to her and she's not treating it like a machine more like a superior being with feelings. But that's the same thing you said as well. We feel for the machine because we see it like a character - just like she does. So that would make us crazy too!

I think Root wanted to be the one to free the machine. She acts like a religious zealot. Like she worships the machine. And in her eyes, she's the savior making the ultimate sacrifice of her humanity for her god and saving all people in the process. Definitely a Jesus complex.

Every little puzzle piece slides into place with this show. Also, they're really good at season finales.

Reese in God Mode is one of the most divine things ever.

I think she also wanted to free it while keeping a connection to it. She spent a day with God talking to her, and it was everything she imagined. And then to have it pulled away, and she didn't even get to be the savior was too much for her.

In an episode filled with amazingness, I do want to highlight the Special Counsel's death at the end. We have spent the whole season thinking of him as just as another slimy politician. Doing whatever it takes to save his own ass. But then at the end he accepts it. Just so much character in his last moment. It shows he wasn't just another politician. He was a patriot and he truly believed in the program and what they were doing. And because he screwed up and lost the Machine on his watch, he believed he deserved that bullet. Just great writing top to bottom.

Root is a true believer and she wanted to meet her god. Not to be punny but without the machine she's rootless. The machine seems to be the one thing that seems to give her life hope and purpose, especially since she has such a dim view of human nature. In a way she is somewhat like-minded to Ford in Westworld (also a Jonathan Nolan show). She thinks that the AI is a superior life form and she's willing to do what it takes to save it.

(Putting this part of my comment here because it’s too long to read otherwise and I can’t seem to put a line break on mobile... ) I gotta say, Root’s moment of despair in the server room is the most human we’ve seen her so far. It might be the only reason that I don’t find her as annoying in this episode as in previous ones. Her crazy shtick (much as I love Amy Acker) got old for me way back in 2x02 but she does have an interesting “meeting of the minds” chemistry with Finch. Their exchanges were genuinely interesting. Still, I would much rather she had died here in this finale. As someone who’s seen the whole series, I do think she adds a dynamic element to the show. But I also think that other avenues would have been just as interesting to explore. I’m probably in the minority when I say that the first two seasons are my favorite, despite future seasons having some of the best episodes this show ever produced.

Wanda Did Nothing Wrong

Root definitely doesn’t have a “Jesus complex” She literally just wants to save the machine, and sometimes Harold, because he built God. Everyone else is bad code. It isn’t until Robin and the machine start interacting that she begins to change her operating procedure
