'We know Pete doesn't pullout' is one of my alltime favourite reaction lines.

Todd “Canuck” Schmuck

Guess it’s been a while since I saw this episode. Interstellar came out in 2014, and I’m just noticing the similarities with this episode now(or at least the idea of an emotional connection between two people linking them like a tether across the dimensions of time and space). As hokey as it seems, it actually solves a hard science aspect to a lot of these stories, as the idea of a person teleporting/transporting/etc to a specific place and/or time would require an insanely complex amount of math. Even if I stay perfectly still for 5 minutes, I would be in a completely different place relative to time and space(just to lay out 4 of the many variables of location change, you have the rotation of the earth, the orbit of the earth around the sun, the movement of the sun through space, and the movement of the Milky Way galaxy due to the constant expansion of time and space). Having some way to lock onto a fixed point solves that while adding a sentimental aspect to a scientific story. I know some people don’t like stories that do that, but as long as we have no idea how so many things work as they do, I’m ok with works of fiction playing around with theoretical possibilities if they use it to tell a good story(the whole genre of science fiction is built on stories that are basically variations of “what if...” scenarios used to tell their story).
