This has been going on for longer than a 100 years. Look into the luddites in the very early 1800s.

I do like this. Something a little different, and yet still engaging. Already looking forward to the next edition of Franlab Action News! :)

I like the idea. I hope it gets enough response for you to keep it going. About the light bulb availability in certain neighborhoods, I live in a 'developing' country (Belize). At times, it really does seem to be developing, and at others, very much a third world place. As such, we get almost exclusively, low end, bulbs, power tools, you name it, we get it, and most of it is, truthfully, crap. The environment here, being tropical, has extremes of heat and humidity, which help destroy the best of technology. It's absolutely merciless on anything less than the best. We don't have easy access to big box stores, etc. Most of our businesses are mom and pop shops and operate on very low margins, thereby making it likely that we only get the out-of-date castoffs from the first world, whether it's the US/Canada, Europe, or China. Many of our mom and pop shops are owned by immigrant Chinese, and have their supply sources in China. They're not going to get the best that China has to offer, as most of the population here is faced with the daily struggle to just survive, with very little or no disposable or other income. We tend to get the cheapest incandescent bulbs, cheapest plumbing supplies, it continues for virtually every other commodity. We're kind of the lower tier of that neighborhood you mentioned in your news item. Keep up the good work. I always look forward to your posts.

Good idea. I follow a few news channels, and read newspapers online, as it is difficult to get The NY Times, and the Washington Post here in the Netherlands. Good to get more science news any way

Sounds like a good plan Fran.

Reading is very labor intensive for me. I like this idea. I'm not worried that you would do "too much" of it because you have so much other stuff that you do. Great idea. Thank you.

Yes, this works!

Some simple math on a working theory, each chute quarters the speed - speed = 100, open one chute: speed = 100/4, two chutes: speed = 100/16, three chutes: 100/64, too slow for fourth chute - so unless they open all simultaneously...

I loved it!. I don't watch TV news either. Never. What I do is read Google News, which is pre-digested to my likings which are very tuned to was covered here. The problem is, that I have no one to talk to as most of my friends have little to no interest in science. I felt I was having a conversation with Fran this morning. Cool!

Interesting to hear an "over the pond" perspective on some of these stories :) I had to bite my tongue a little on the replacement lamps story - over this way bulbs are the things you plant in the garden :P On another topic, my university are part of the effort to collect space debris and have had 4 prototypes on orbit that worked very well. However the political / legal issue of who is allowed to capture what is preventing a lot of the clean-up. Looking forward to the next "news" :)

As a Patron of your channel, I see my role in the same way as a shareholder of a corporation. Whilst I provide funding to the channel, I don't know enough about YouTube to really decide what is the best form of video is for your channel, I can only give my opinion on how I feel about any particular video. Having said all that I like this format, so if it gets good support and you believe it will add to the viability of the channel, then go ahead and add the format to the mix.

Loved the video and couldn't agree more about TV news (I can speak only for the USA, but the BBC isn't what it used to be either.)

Yes. More, please!

Jasper

You mentioned news. I am going to mention climate change, the thousands of nukes still ready to launch.

I really enjoyed this Fran. More please! A fascinating digest of the kind there doesn't seem to be a home for anymore.

Thumb's Up. Please continue
