Hi everybody!

Cyan and I both enjoy reading quite a bit, but we've never been able to read the same book at the same time. So we decided that we'd take this year to start a little Book Club, where we'd take a month to read a book and then discuss it together. We started way at the start with The Iliad, but our full list has all kinds of books from across time and space.

Given the sudden influx of spare time we all have, I thought it would be fun to share our little project with you, so that you can read along, and perhaps even discuss with a friend or fellow bookworm! To that end, we've prepared a handful of discussion prompts to guide your reading and help you reflect on the story. We had a really fun time reading over the Iliad — It's been nearly 7 years since I last read it all the way through, and it was so nice to go back to it again after all this time; there was so much more I was able to understand and appreciate than when I read it in high school! — and we hope that you can have a little fun with this as well.

Next on our list is another epic from a little further north: Beowulf!

Happy reading!

Hi Blue, hi Cyan! Hope you're both having a great weekend so far! Do you both have a translation or version you prefer for The Iliad? Some of my profs were partial to Fagles, but what do you think? Cheers!

For health reasons, I have to generally stick to happy, fun books, with as many laughs as possible. I know the general story of the Iliad, as I re-read the Classics Illustrated comic book version, several times, when I was little. Now I just want to show up in a 100-ton battlemech equipped with loud speakers (that translate on the fly), and water cannons fed by sea water. "Oi! You can break it up now, or break it up really, really wet!" And the whole Helen thing goes to family court.

Hiya! Cyan was reading Alexander Pope's translation, and I was reading the Fagles translation. I love Fagles' Iliad so much. He does such a good job balancing the style and the content. Pope is really beautifully written if you want to see it all in rhymed verse and Cyan liked it a lot, but I personally have a harder time following what he's actually saying. Lots of good options, and it comes down to what you prioritize as a reader! -B
