Hey friends, it's always weird to say you are excited to watch war movies but I think we have some pretty amazing stories here in this poll so I look forward to seeing them unfold and learning more as always. Thank you for your suggestions. This is POLL 1, here is POLL 2. Make sure to vote on both, In 3 days I will take the top 4 from each for a final poll.

Upcoming post coming in a few!!

I mean, I get that Platoon was an extremely well directed, well acted film, but it's probably one of the least enjoyable films to watch I've ever seen... not sure I get the love for it.

Darren Hill

Well it won the Oscar for best movie in 1986 and was a huge box office success. So clearly many loved it.

Jeff Milcheck

I’m completely baffled that Apocalypse Now isn’t winning this poll by a landslide. It’s not only the greatest war film, it’s one of the best movies ever made.... also don’t understand the love for We Were Soldiers. But eh, to each their own.

Patrick Flanagan

Not sure if it's meant to be "enjoyed." Respected and appreciated, maybe. But it's a dark story.

Patrick Flanagan

APOCALYPSE NOW doesn't make an American audience feel proud of itself for prosecuting a war where millions of people were killed, so It's A Bad Movie, apparently.

These are all impressive movies and you would enjoy, or at least appreciate even the more "difficult to watch" films. I would still recommend Full Metal Jacket and Patton over any of these....forgive me Francis Ford Coppola. I have to vote for Megan Leavey, because for the first time I had never heard of it before this moment. I had to google it. Which is a new experience for me outside of the most obscure or bizarre art films. It apparently had overall positive reviews, and I have always found Kate Mara an interesting albeit under appreciated performer. Plus, it has a dog....how can you go wrong. I'm just interested in a opportunity to watch a film with the PIB community that I haven't already seen.

Jake McNulty

Actually, fun fact, Coppola wrote the screenplay for Patton, so in a way you're still kinda voting for him.

Wade Watts

We were soldiers has one of the cheapest production values of any war movie ever.

Yeah, unfortunately, winning the Oscar for Best Picture is no guarantee of a good film. It's indicative of a film the hoighty toighty critics like, sure, but it's actually a rarity that I like the Oscar winner (there are exceptions like American Beauty, Chicago, Braveheart, Dances with Wolves, etc... but I tend not to like the vast majority of "best picture" winners. I find some are just downright, well, bad, at least from my PoV). Again, I thought Platoon did some things very well, but I really like to have a story of some kind, with a beginning and an end. Platoon kind of leaves those out.

Definitely hoping for Empires of the Sun. What a great movie!

Apocalypse Now should be on top.

I must have seen a different movie with the same name, because the We Were Soldiers I saw was one of the best war films ever.

Cassie, you chose the wrong Midway movie, you should have chosen the 1976 version. The 2019 version is pretty good but the 1976 has Charles Heston in it and original footage from the battle of Midway itself. Btw, the battle of Midway is my favourite WWII battle, 5 mins of chaos changed the tide of the war.

Tharon Schultz

Respectfully I disagree, you can’t beat the historical accuracy of Midway, it’s also a good and entertaining film. (The 1976 version is better though, hard to beat footage from the battle itself for historical accuracy, plus Charles Heston)

I wholeheartedly disagree, at least insomuch as the way I look at a story.... something with a beginning and an end. But hey, I'm 100% certain there are movies I love that you don't, and that's okay. I'm not going to sit there and try to convince you to like the movies I like. If you don't like a film, that's fine. I didn't like Platoon. I was left completely unsatisfied by it. It's like having a romcom where the ending leaves the romance up in the air after only half-heartedly addressing it. It doesn't matter how good the acting or directing is if you don't find the story satisfying, and I didn't find Platoon satisfying.

Just read down the comments and you'll see there's a LOT of disagreement about pretty much all of these films. To each their own.

we needed Kellys Heros on this list

Martin Skouboe

Some really great movies on here but I'm really hoping for We Were Soldiers
