Western Movie Tournament (Patreon)

It is time people! Time for some Westerns on this channel. I thought John Wayne was a former president up until like 2 months ago, so I guess it's time I am educated in the ways of the wild west. I have this bias against Westerns in my head for some reason, but I am hoping, like pretty much everything else I didn't want to watch before, I will be surprised! 

These are all suggestions from patrons, a sweet 16 bracket. They are randomly seeded, so there will be a losers bracket as well. Each round is 24 hours long and it will end on January 4th!

I am excited...I think, lets do this!

I'm looking at the bracket and beginning to understand it... Unforgiven has a chance to make it to Losers Round 4 where it goes against Maverick The Quick and The Dead faces off with 3:10 to Yuma, a fair fight The Searchers will square off against The Magnificent Seven, whoah could get messy

might be curious research to note which of the movies have an interesting female character, not necessarily in a romantic role. I guess I count at least 8 out of 16 - but I'm not familiar with many of the other titles.

Looks like it's gonna be either Magnificent Seven or Tombstone vs. The Good Bad Ugly. Based on the number of comments I'd say this is a pretty passionate group of western fans. Given the number of movies omitted from the list and some of the tough choices we were given maybe Cassie could consider another poll or list other than a losers poll. Westerns are obviously a popular genre with this group. Another poll would probably be a good idea Outlaw Josey Wales Appaloosa Open Range Lonesome Dove Rio Bravo Eldorado Young Guns Silverado Etc etc.....point is...lots of great movies passed over. Let's get one more full poll after the loser poll and do this right.

You have a great list and interesting that you have both El Dorado and Rio Bravo considering that El Dorado is a remake of Rio Bravo, you seem to really like that story. I like both movies, it is hard to pick between them. I like Robert Mitchum in the drunk sheriff role better than Dean Martin.

Unforgiven vs Good-Bad-Ugly in the first round? Oof! That's a textbook justification for a losers' bracket. This category is already sufficiently loaded, but as I mentioned in a previous comment, even though it is technically science-fiction, I consider Kevin Costner's The Postman (1997) to be a pseudo-western epic. I've always thought it was unfairly underrated (as opposed to Waterworld :-) ). One western I only discovered recently is Gunfighter's Moon (1995), which I enjoyed primarily (or rather solely) for Lance Henriksen's performance. Given the number of excellent movies in this tournament, I'm definitely not pushing it for Cassie, but some of y'all might enjoy it.

Once Upon a Time in the West is my all time favorite Western. Charles Bronson the harmonica playing hero! Henry Fonda playing a villain!!! I think this was Sergio Leone at his best!

I gotta ask, do you think Fonda wore heavy make up? Or was he naturally that tanned? I thought it looked pretty natural, but seeing him in B & W so much, he looked naturally pasty...

I agree! Leone loved the Western genre. Music, actors, setting were all optimal. Of course Fonda as the villain was so anti previous characters.

Joseph yes it seemed such a 180 for Fonda but god was he good!! And with those cold steel blue eyes!! Awesome! One of the best Westerns villains ever!

Rio Bravo and El Dorado are both great. I think I'd always prefer El Dorado because I saw it first. Plus later in life I wrote a paper on the poem "El Dorado" in HS.

Is there any way we can add "Open Range" it's a great Kevin Costner/Robert Duvall western, with a love story!

Another recommendation for you fine connoisseurs of spaghetti westerns is Sartana's Here... Trade Your Pistol for a Coffin (1970), currently available on YouTube. Fun movie.

If you've seen all of the classics, The Frisco Kid (1979) with Gene Wilder (and a young Harrison Ford) is a nice little western-comedy. And it is only now that I have realized with great shock (!!!) that the classic comedy-western Blazing Saddles (1974) is conspicuous in its absence.

Okay, I shall now reply to my own comment... And the winners of westerns who have interesting female roles goes to... Tombstone - wowsers, insert winky face Maverick - I have not seen this movie but Clarise is on the cover! Unforgiven - yes The Quick and The Dead - the lead role

Open Range is one of the best westerns of recent years and it has one of the best gunfights ever similar to High Noon which you should also watch. Both have good love stories also which are right up your alley.
