Ok let’s do another fun bracket! I want to do a “classics” bracket but more specifically films from 1960 and prior. I looked at the AFI film list of 100 movies for 100 years and i have not seen EVEN ONE from their list that was before 1960. (EDIT-i lied, i have seen Snow White)

So if you want to make a suggestion leave a comment with one movie per comment and like the comments (upvote) ones you agree with! We are going to do the top 16 in a bracket (with a losers bracket as well) and i’ll watch the top two winners! Seeding will be based on likes as well.

I am overwhelmed with the support of all of you and appreciate you so much for helping me along my movie journey!

ps. Chernoby episode 4 will be on patreon tomorrow and episode 5 the following Monday

La Strada (1954)

Robin T

City Lights (1931) - Chaplin's best, though The Gold Rush (1925) might be a better introduction to silents

Robin T

The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) - emotional salve after all those war movies

Robin T

Some Like It Hot (1959) - definitive Marilyn Monroe and one of the funniest films ever

Robin T

Rear Window (1954) - a good first Hitchcock

Brian McGovern

I think Cassie needs to revise the rules for future polls. Mr Toad is abusing the rules :)

Robin T

Casablanca (1942) - classic for a reason

Joseph Krider

To Have and Have Not (1944) - not as well known, but still very good, The African Queen (1951)_ - Kathrine Hepburn and Bogart. Need I say more?? The Maltese Falcon (1941). And for something completely different and unexpected, The Quiet Man (1952) - Maureen O'Hara, John Wayne and Barry Fitzgerald

Charles Mills

I'd love to see her react to "The Quiet Man." On the old Highlander message board there would be a debate whether Kate was a strong or weak woman. I thought she was strong. You can disagree with what she wanted, but she got what she wanted from John Wayne and Victor McLaglen. She'd like "African Queen" too. I never that got much into "The Maltese Falcon."

Pure rom-com - "Desk Set" (1957) with Spencer Tracy & Katherine Hepburn. I used to think Tracy was too old for her, until I found out they had a longstanding deeply devoted complicated real life relationship.

Sean Stuart

before 1960 i would like to recommend on the waterfront with a young marlon brando and the great dictator the best talkie of Charlie Chaplin

Shaun Stuart

Well...there aren't any sleepers on this list. No "dark horses" as it were (speaking of which -- no westerns? We should have been more careful in the suggestion process). The double elimination was a great idea. A first round loss isn't instant death, right?

2023-03-14 11:35:37 This is cool, Cassie! I hope you also do an 80's Animation bracket that includes Akira, Heavy Metal & Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Love those movies and would like to see your reactions to them. :D

A round loss (any round) puts you in the losers bracket. The winner of the losers bracket gets up against the winner of the winners bracket for a final showdown.

How about an Alfred Hitchcock bracket, if you cant find one of his movies to like you are not trying...
