Hey guys! Here's the full reaction to Episode 3. This one was ROUGHHHH! The sound on my TV is a bit loud until I turn it down about 8 minutes into the episode, sorry about that! This series is drawing me in and I can't help but want to binge the whole thing but I think taking a break between episodes is for the best! Anyway, thanks everyone for being here and supporting the channel! Enjoy the reaction!

I’ve watched several reactions to Chernobyl. And aside from the slow response of the Soviet government and the ineptitude of the managers at Chernobyl, the biggest controversy among reactors is how to feel about the firefighter’s wife and her risky behavior. For what it’s worth, I think the writers and actor do a good job of suggesting that she didn’t fully understand the kind of risk that was involved … and crucially, we never hear anyone in authority even try to explain it to her. They give orders and leave it at that. I think we are meant to understand that this is an ingrained habit in Soviet society –– explaining things just isn’t a priority for anyone. And the flip side of that is that ordinary people like the firefighter’s wife find it easier to dismiss the warnings as just more petty, pointless, heartless regulations. As the professor says in his tape in the first episode, when lies are everywhere, you’re less likely to recognize when something someone says is actually true and important. That’s my take anyway.

One thing id like to clarify that this show gets COMPLETELY WRONG that id like to happily EDUCATE you all on. I actually did a research paper on radiation in college specifically about the chernobyl incident. The woman who is pregnant in this ep, her baby in reality and her would be safe from visiting her husband like she did. The biggest thing this Chernobyl mini series gets wrong so far is the depiction of radiation as contagious, like a virus. >>>RADIATION IS NOT CONTAGIOUS<<<. Once someone has removed their clothes and been washed, as the firefighters were in real life, the radioactivity is internalized and therefore people around them are completely safe no matter how close they are. A lot of doctors didnt know that in this time, but this show makes even the two nuclear scientists wrong about how radiation works in the human body, hense her freaking out when she saw her touching her husband on the other side of the plastic. If something does happen to her and her baby because of her visitation with her husband that is actually a falsehood and misunderstanding of how radiation works inside the human body that this show got wrong. The whole point of the plastic in reality is for the patience immune system. I can still look past that nitpick though with how accurate everything else has been so far in this show. I am still watching this with you. I wont watch Ep 4 until you release it here on patreon so I can watch it and experience it having no idea what will happen! This ep had me almost in tears! I too am not looking forward to what Ep 4 has to offer, but we will go into the fires of Mount Doom together! Thanks again Cassie!

The only ones who understood that at the time were the nurses and doctors in Hospital Number 6. The doctors there did let Lyudmilla stay in the room with all the firefighters for long durations of time without any issues, however according to herself not a single one of them bothered to explain what was happening to them. The many nuclear scientists that visited the hospital in search for answers thought that it was contagious, and so did many normal people as well.

Cassie, another amazing reaction. You're so sincere, and genuine, it's very much appreciated. 1) the flashlights at the beginning: I believe the batteries died due to the radiation, but they were clicking them because some flashlights have tiny generators on them. 2) the miners say it's 50 degrees, if you didn't already know, that's in Celsius, not fahrenheit. It was about 122° f in the mine they were digging, thus the taking off the clothes. Not sure if you Canadians use C instead of F? Thank you for watching this series, it really is a beautifully made, terrible story.

The Acute Radiation Sickness from high contamination of internalized radiation is mostly through your lungs. You will only get radioactive particles in your stomach if you eat something very contaminated. Our lungs are very good at absorbing materials as it is a part of our immune system to prevent filling up our lungs. You can experience this if you are smoking cigarates, and why smoker lungs looks crazy. So basically the radioactive material is now entangled in your lung membranes and further inside your body. Our immune system and blood flow is also helpful in bringing around the radioactive material inside our body, like if you have been poisoned. Alpha and Beta radiation has a very small range of impact before they get absorbed by basically anything, and the fluids of any kind would themselves act as a small radiation shield. In almost all cases you would not be able to detect any increase from the normal background radiation since it is in so small quantities. It is the only case where i would actually recommend a UK morning show. They had a showcase of a radioactive rock by some nuclear scientist, and she just wears a glove and holds it in her hand while the geigar counter goes crazy when it gets near. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6x2PcB-XaVA

You aren’t wrong in saying I wouldn’t have watched this if you weren’t reacting to it, because I lived through it and still remember it being on tv day and night! So I figured why watch it? But I’m glad now! But honestly it’s like every other full length you do, it’s like being kicked back watching it with just a friend you always hang out with!! You are the absolute best Cassie!! We love you ❤️❤️

Jake, I deleted my comments because I realized they were spoilers! 🥴

HAHAH oh shit. I totally didnt think about that. xD Regardless here is some info from the University of California San Fran on radiation and how it wont spread from person to person, my educated guess is, what ever happened to her in real life is a result of the explosion itself and the government not evacuating people right away. https://www.ucsf.edu/news/2019/07/414976/real-chernobyl-qa-radiation-exposure-expert There is also this article explaining the things this show got wrong or that didnt actually happen. If you are curious (dont read if you dont want spoils) https://www.forbes.com/sites/michaelshellenberger/2019/06/06/why-hbos-chernobyl-gets-nuclear-so-wrong/?sh=50ac07f3632f

where were you living when it was happening? This nice comment and kind words just made my night, thank you!

I watched this when it first came out and it left such an impression that I've had to convince myself to watch it with you again. This is probably the hardest and most consistently negative series I've ever seen as far as content goes. The miners are one of the only sources of levity. But it is so well done! Big time props to you for watching it essentially by yourself, because it is so sad and difficult. Yes this one was difficult because of the images of the radiation effects. The next episode was harder for me because of what has to be done. Once you make it through ep 4 though, the final episode really pays it off. Thank you for watching this and reminding me just how amazing this series is!

I was 16 and living in Virginia! We weren’t so much affected by it as the west coast, but I remember ppl in California outside with handkerchiefs around their faces, hmmm that’s familiar now I think about it!! But this was the period of time “acid rain “ was coined as a “thing “ ! Every time it rained, they were talking about acid rain!! I’m positive it had to have messed up the water table But at the same time, Gorbachev was hailed as a savior for Russia! Which propelled him to the presidency, and ended the Cold War! So was it worth it……? Time will be our judge I suppose 🙏❤️

I wonder if Cassie from 7 months ago would have stuck with this series, and been as hungry for more as she is now? I feel like Private Ryan might have shocked her horribly, but desensitized her enough to be able to deal with stuff better? Like scar tissue on her soul...

Evilsponge

House of Saddam is an excellent two part HBO series that is also a historical drama much like Chernobyl.

Mikio

I would assume that you would literally have to like eat a piece of radioactive rock or radioactive metal to be able to... have something actual radioactive go out again, since our body's wont digest it.

The producers themselves said that they took the liberty to add in the cranking flashlights so we as an audience could keep on following them. In real life the small wires that connects the battery to the light were fried, so they had to walk in pure darkness and only knew were they where to go because of the pipe numbers they had been tracking until that point. It took them a long time to walk in the dark, as they were holding on to eachother and making sure not to trip or walk into something in front of them.

True Detective (the first season mini series 8 episodes) is insanely good. It won a bunch of awards. The following 2 seasons failed to live up to the first and have no connection they are different stories with different characters so you can just watch the first season.

Anakin Starkiller

This one will absolutely break you . And even if it doesn't it should fill your heart with anger and heart break.

Something I didn't spot when I watched it the first time - at around 15-17 minutes when Boris and Valery are walking outside, the KGB agents following them are the "couple" Valery spoke to at the hotel in the previous episode. I remember you asking aloud why Valery gave them the "official" line and played down the danger (while asking for his vodka in an upturned glass to minimise contamination). That's why - what sounded like an innocuous question from a chance encounter with a couple at a hotel was actually two KGB agents making sure that Valery was maintaining the required level of secrecy. He was very wise to be careful who he told about what he knew and it would likely have gone very bad for him had he not.

After watching the first two was upsetting I'm worried about the third one. I live in Washington state after I started watching the mini series I looked to see where the nearest nuclear power plant was it's near the Columbia river.

Jon Johns yeah the whole rest of the world uses Celsius. The scientific community does as well when it comes to scientific papers and research.
