As for Episode 7, while I liked the Speirs run and also the cathedral scene (including the discussion between Lipton and Speirs), my favorite moment in Episode 7: "Alright, I want mortars and grenade launchers on that building till it's gone. When it's gone, I want 1st to go straight in. Forget going around. Everybody else, follow me." --Lt. Speirs As for Episode 8, Winters made the right call.

Cassie, Since you have watched BoB, now you should watch "The Pacific" which was made and produced by the same people who Produced Band of Brothers and Saving Private Ryan. It is 10 episodes like Band of Brothers and follows a similar format but follows U.S. Marines in the Pacific Theater of War during WW2.

Your reactions are priceless. You make my day every time you post. Watching Band of Brothers for the first time can be a little confusing. My apologies, this is long overdue. Commissioned Officers General - 1 to 5 stars on the collar or shoulders and helmet. Gen "Ike" Eisenhower had 5 stars Colonel - eagles on the collar or shoulders and helmet Lieutenant Colonel - silver oak leaves on the collar or shoulders and helmet Major - gold oak leaves Captain - 2 silver bars 1st Lieutenant - silver bar 2nd Lieutenant - gold bar Non Commissioned Officers or NCO's or non coms Sergeant - at least 3 stripes on the shirt sleeves Corporal - 2 stripes Private - 1 stripe not a NCO This is just to give you a rough general idea squad - 15 guys platoon - 3 squads company - 3 platoons battalion - 3 companies regiment - 3 battalions division - several regiments Random stuff CO - commanding officer CP - command post OP - observation post 88 - a nasty, filthy, big, bad-ass, super lethal German artillery gun (cannon)

Recall that Spears said that he had accepted that he was already dead (he imagined it was inevitable). Believing this allowed him to do what needed to be done, when it needed doing - or die trying. "All war depended upon it". I do love the music and Lipton's smile as well :)

Wow! Thank you for this, also WOW that is a lot, I'm sure to people familiar with it it is common knowledge, but I sure had a tough time keeping track of the ranks for sure. I also really like how honorable and symbolic the military is with their ranks, and how organized it all seems.

Yes, true, that's why Spears seemed like he had no fear!. Although that kind of takes away the whole thing of HOPE as well right? Which also war depends on to get through? I get it both ways-expect the worst and be pleasantly surprised if you make it out alive, or think you will make it out of there alive no matter what and maybe that determination helps you stay alive? I don't know, thinking out loud. Obviously it worked for Spears and he led with no fear! That scene was so great

More than probably any other show, when the end came it was weird- of course I want the war to be over..but can Easy just do one more mission (zero casualties, lots of in jokes). I watched the doc too..and any time I've complained about my life or job, I deserve at least a kick in the shin bc I couldn't do what they did.

Most excellent!! You will know what was history and what was Hollywood when it’s all over. The journey will deepen your appreciation for and understanding of Easy company, and many others like them. I know, I know. You may not think that is possible, but it will. The documentary Nick Hook mentioned, called “We Stand Alone Together,” is also worth the watch. I’ll message another recommend, cause this is getting a little lint. As always, can’t wait for the next release, and hope you enjoy.

Cassie, Don’t worry about spacing it out. Your reactions are gold and we love them. Keep up the great work. I love your reactions on the war stuff because of how authentic they are. Makes me not feel like a wimp when the movie starts tugging on the emotional strings. Keep up the great work!

Since you’ve finished the series, it won’t be a spoiler to bring up an incident in Don Malarkey’s memoir, which I finished a few weeks ago. He was very close to Skip Muck, who was killed in the artillery barrage while holed up with Alex Penkala. Malarkey was hard hit by Muck’s death, as he recounted that Skip was so good to him. While they were in training at Toccoa, Col. Sink had 2nd Battalion complete a 118 mile march to beat the Japanese record. Malarkey got very bad shin splints towards the end of the march, so bad that when they bivouacked in the woods, he couldn’t walk to the mess tent to eat. So he started to crawl to the tent. Skip saw him and said, “No friend of mine is going to crawl to get his chow”. He made him wait, came back with 2 trays of food, and sat on the ground and ate with him. Malarkey never forgot Skip’s friendship to the end of his life and always choked up when he thought of his death at Bastogne. I’ve seen this series many times but after reading about his friendship with Skip, I really cried after seeing him killed. 😢

Spielberg and Hanks have also just begun work on their third WWII miniseries, this time for Apple TV+ instead of HBO. It will focus on the experiences of airmen in the US Army Air Force fighting over Europe. I would also recommend last year's film GREYHOUND, written by and starring Hanks, about a Navy destroyer protecting a convoy from U-boats during the Battle of the Atlantic.

I was fortunent enough to meet one of the Tuskegy Airmen and a Battlefield reporter who went in to Normandy in the second wave of boats and later would nearly be killed during the mission to relive the 101st at Batstone. I was adopted, Three of my Grandfathers either served or added in the war. One was an Engineering Officer aboard KM Bismarck and one of the few to have survived his sinking.. One Flew B-17s out of England and one used his Commercial Fishing boat to ferry troops and supplies around the Aleutian Islands in Alaska when Japan held some of them. The stories I have hurd where simply unimaginable by those who did not live thru it.

That is why, as my dad says, “The more they’ve seen, the less they talk.” How could we ever really grasp the depth of what they have seen, done, lived through, or the bond they have. I personally had my one moment of, “If this is how I’m feeling. Here. Now. Like this. I can’t even imagine the weight of what is thought and felt by those who’ve served, and fought.” It is a moment I will treasure forever.

I remember that part of the book. There is something special about those who have that deep of a friendship. Mutual suffering creates unbreakable bonds and I personally can attest to that.

The germans apparently put timed fuses into the grenades so they'd explode at tree top height instead of when they hit the ground, so that the tree would explode too and "sent" tree pieces all around injuring soldiers.

When i started this review i never expected you to be so into it on an emotional level, knowing each characters and what happened to them in the past. It is a sad mini-series but you are a reviewer/reaction person i've ever seen. Can't wait to finish this and start watching your reaction to The Pacific.

I’m not 100% sure it’d be necessary. We had developed, by war’s end, proximity fuses and I’m certain neither the Germans nor Japanese had, given they are an outcropping of radar technology and neither Axis power developed far along that research axis. Old-fashioned contact fuses in a heavy enough forest would achieve the same effect.
