After I watched the film I looked up what it was based on.  With that info the movie means something different then what I thought.

Thanks for reacting to this! I know it may be a different viewing experience when you actually understand the context behind it but I'm just a sucker for those blind reactions the way we all were exposed to this film for the first time: without understanding shit about what's going on, without seeing any sense or purpose to what they were doing other than getting completely twisted and deranged. I'm curious to what exactly did you look for after watching it lmao, anyway, for your reference: Hunter S. Thompson (Raoul Duke) was a writer and journalist who became very popular after publishing a book on the Hell's Angels (and all the serious journalistic work that preceded it such as covering the fall of Saigon and smuggling operations in South America). By the time this novel (Fear and Loathing in LV) was published, he already was a recognized mainstream figure in the US. That's why, I think, the cop who pulled him over (Gary Busey) gave him a pass, saying something like "a guy with a mind like yours ought to try the land crab" or some shit like that. Fun fact, that line where he was like "may I have a kiss before you go" was 100% improvised on the spot lol Anyway, that dude (Hunter S Thompson) is regarded as the creator of "gonzo journalism" (a style of journalism that features the author as its protagonist, simultaneously experiencing and reporting on a story from a first-person point of view). Like the novel this movie is based on, for instance, was originally meant to be an article on the Mint 400 desert race, and an article on the DA's convention against drugs, and that's that... but with just a touch of "gonzo", it became this hot mess of crazy shit lol. Eventually he became associated with this caricature of a twisted drug fiend, which is how I came to find this movie. But as I grew older, I started to appreciate much more his serious journalist/writer persona, as when he is by himself, working on his typewriter and reflecting. Yeah, he was crazy, and he really did a shit ton of drugs constantly, but more than that, he was a truly gifted writer. He also ran for sheriff on the "Freak Power" ticket in 1970 (there is a great documentary about it) and worked as the official political correspondent for Rolling Stones magazine for many years. He wrote a book covering the 1972 presidential campaign which is simply amazing. It's called Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72. His attorney, Oscar Acosta (Dr. Gonzo), also ran for sheriff for the LA county in 1970 and received over 100,000 votes. Yeah. The attorney that was wallowing in brown water. LOL Great reaction as usual, keep it coming!!

Also, on that scene where he is reminiscing about the past where he is in a party and he goes "holy shit... that's me!", he is actually looking to the real Hunter S. Thompson there lmao Another "easter egg" is when he's trying to bounce without paying the hotel and the guy's like "I have this letter for Dr. Thompson"

Lmao. The attorney was the most crazy part of this film to me. So I wanted to look up more about that character. Then I ended reading about pretty much everything that you wrote here while I searched. Finding out that this had any basis in reality was hilarious to me.
