Honestly? Not real sure how to feel about this one. Lots of telling instead of showing, but I've got so much time to fast-forward through if I'm ever going to get to the story I want to tell.

/sigh

Now, I'm wondering if I should have started later and just flashed back to all this? Oh well. That's the joy of my Patreon, you get to see how the sausage is made!

———

Loe excused herself to the bathroom so she could clean up. There, she looked in the mirror, scowling. Despite the lio penchant for mirrors—even the shortest manes take some grooming time—she didn’t keep one in her room. In fact, if she never had to look in the mirror again, that would be too soon. But here in the bathroom, she had little choice. She stared in the full-length mirror, and her reflection stared back at her.

Nephal save her, she really despised how she looked. Her height was good and her mane decent, but everything else was just … wrong. She was certain of it. Every time she saw herself, she felt the exact same thing: This isn’t the body I’m supposed to have!

Although Loe couldn’t explain why—and she most certainly wasn’t going to discuss it with anyone—she was absolutely convinced that she was supposed to be male. She was male, but yet her body was clearly female. Why the mismatch? Was it a celestial error? A defective gene? A cosmic jest? Some sort of spiritual … test?

She closed her eyes—not praying, precisely, but certainly not talking to herself, “What do you want from me, Nephal? Why am I like this, and what does it accomplish?”

Loe had been born frail and feminine—by lio standards, at least—and only through sheer will and determination, working out constantly, had she been able to add on the muscle mass she had managed. Meanwhile, males who had been born with the proper plumbing merely had to eat a little junk food to bulk up. It was so unfair!

If only she was in the right body, she wouldn’t need to try so hard and everyone wouldn’t stare at her like she was some sort of freak. But some mistakes—particularly those made by higher powers—could not be fixed. No matter how she scrimped and saved, stores don’t sell penises.

Loe turned on the tap and washed herself up, pausing for a moment to wonder just what had happened on the couch. She had masturbated before—toyed with what plumbing she’d been given, at least—and the experiences had been pleasant enough, but never had she felt anything even remotely similar to what she’d felt with Kahoku. That was an orgasm? Wow! Well, now things made a lot more sense—namely, why guys were so obsessed with sex. If sex felt anything like that, then she’d want it too.

Loe looked in the mirror once more. Well, she would want sex, but not with a guy. Loe felt plenty of sexual desire, but always directed at females like it should for a male. And as much as she wanted a penis, she certainly didn’t want anyone sticking one in her. Yuck.

Kahoku must have sensed that the orgasm had left Loe uneasy and didn’t insist on talking about it. For that, Loe was thankful, but in the days that followed, Loe experimented more vigorously when alone, trying to recapture that feeling once more. Again, the experience was nice enough, but try as she might, a climax eluded her.

Why? Was it her frustration that she had the wrong genitals? Had the evening on the couch been a fluke? Or was there something else wrong?

Curiously enough, now that Kahoku and Loe had been intimate—or as intimate as two people without penises could be, Loe figured—their relationship grew a lot more personal. They hugged more, touched more, kissed each other on the lips instead of the cheeks. Loe didn’t mind that at all, and only a week later, the pair found themselves making out on the couch once more.

Loe was dominant, pressing her weight down on her roommate, moaning and grinding against Kahoku while their fingers explored. This time, Loe didn’t back away when she climaxed. Instead, she let out a roar of satisfaction and kept at the smaller lio until she came too. Then, they cuddled together in silence, snuggling in post-coital bliss.

The weeks flew by and Loe felt happier than she could remember ever feeling. Though they didn’t discuss their relationship, the pair was closer than ever. They didn’t sleep in the same room, but every now and then they’d get passionate on the couch.

Are we dating? wondered Loe. Was that even a thing? Station 219 had been the only world that Loe had ever known, but it was a small community only fifty families strong. From time to time, ships would pass their way, but they never stayed long. So, to the best of her knowledge, guys didn’t date guys, and gals didn’t date gals. That just didn’t happen. Guys weren’t attracted to other guys. Gals weren’t attracted to other gals.

Except for Loe, that is. Except for poor, born-in-the-wrong-body Loe.

For the first time in her life, the big tawny lio felt optimistic about the future. In a few more months, the freighter would pass through. Kahoku had a job lined up as a med tech and Loe… Well, Loe had a job. She didn’t know what she’d be doing for the three years between Station 219 and Colony 5, but she had a job secured, so she’d be on the ship.

And she had Kahoku, didn’t she? Three years wasn’t forever, wasn’t long enough, but it was … something, something they could share. Everything … seemed … perfect.

But appearances can be deceiving.

“Guess what!” asked Kahoku, beaming.

“Uh…” mumbled Loe. “You’re making supper?”

“Oh, I’d love to,” said the cream-colored lio, “but I’ve got a date!”

“A date?” whispered Loe, her heart falling into her stomach. She knew she shouldn’t feel hurt. The two roommates weren’t dating, just … well, just doing whatever it was they’d been doing these past few weeks. It wasn’t any sort of relationship. But still, the big gal felt crushed. She tried to keep it from her voice. “Oh, um, congrats. Who asked you out?”

“Okilani,” said Kahoku with a smile.

“Okilani?” Loe thought she’d die. Okilani was a total zero—big and dumb, with no personality whatsoever! She ground her teeth. He didn’t even have a decent physique! As a trainer in the station’s single gym, Loe knew everyone’s workout habits, and she’d never seen Okilani even set paw in the place. “Oh huh. Uh… I didn’t realize you … liked him.”

“Oh, sure,” said the smaller gal. “He’s very handsome.”

“He is?” asked Loe. She couldn’t see it.

Kahoku simply nodded.

And then, the two were dating. He would stop by to pick Kahoku up. Loe would trade a couple words with him, and Kahoku nearly vanished from her life. At nights, Loe would lie in bed alone and wonder if this turn of events had changed their future. Did Kahoku still plan to travel aboard the freighter to Colony 5? Would they spend those three years together? Would Okilani try to find a job on the ship as well?

Sometimes, Okilani would stay the night. Well, no, he really didn’t. Kahoku would go out on a date with the big lump, and then the two would return to the apartment after Loe had turned in for the night. Well, more specifically to Kahoku’s bedroom rather than to the apartment in general. Then, Loe would be treated to a mercifully short serenade of Okilani grunting while the pair had sex. Within a minute, Loe would hear the apartment door open and close after he let himself out. Sheesh!

Loe knew that her roommate had had other lovers before him. Back in school, she’d dated several guys. They’d been nothing serious, sure, but she’d dated each long enough that Loe presumed they’d gotten intimate. Of course, that was before Kahoku had become her roommate and the two had bedrooms separated by only a paper-thin wall.

“Is it … good?” Loe asked her on one of the rare nights where two shared a movie together, one of the nights where Kahoku wasn’t off on a date. “Is he good … at sex?”

To this, the smaller lio shrugged. “He’s okay, I suppose,” she said without embarrassment. “He’s a very … visual person. That’s different.”

Loe didn’t know what that could mean, but didn’t want to dig any further either. Instead, she tried to pull her roommate closer so the two could kiss.

But Kahoku stopped her, putting her fingers across Loe’s lips. With some hesitation, she whispered, “We really shouldn’t.”

“No?” asked Loe with a touch of hurt. She hadn’t expected Okilani’s presence to affect … whatever it was that the roommates had going on. It wasn’t dating, after all. It was just … well, whatever it was. But Loe could see it in the smaller gal’s eyes. So long as she was dating another, she didn’t want to cheat on him.

Loe felt so empty. Sex was far from important, but the couch sessions they’d share were the only sexual release she had. Loe kept trying to masturbate from time to time, but it never worked without help. And now, she didn’t have that? The happiness she’d finally found was rapidly crumbling in her grip.

She wanted to say something, but what? Kahoku didn’t owe her anything, and she sure didn’t want to guilt trip her best and only friend, but she wanted … more than this.

Trying to keep the mood light, she added in a joking tone, “Perhaps, the three of us should try something together.”

To Loe, of course, this was a nauseating prospect. Though she’d love to keep a sexual relationship with Kahoku, she didn’t really want a guy added to the mix. He would absolutely expect to have sex with her, and that was unappealing at best.

Okilani probably wouldn’t mind. Loe might not be an attractive gal, but two gals at once? Every guy wanted to try that out, and Loe doubted such an opportunity had ever presented itself to him.

But Kahoku wrinkled her nose at the suggestion. “That would be … awkward.”

“Heh. Yeah, totally,” agreed Loe. …But she didn’t actually say, “no”.

The weeks went by, and despite Loe’s hopes that the two would break up, they didn’t. Loe remained celibate, growing increasingly sexually desperate—not desperate enough to try dating, but desperate. She even tried masturbating in time to Okilani’s grunts, but that didn’t help either. Without some help, she was never going to climax.

Then one evening, Okilani showed up at the door while Kahoku was off with her family…

Well i dont know about how romance stories are written but i feel like there is a huge plot operation missing here... That maybe this period of life should be a reminice in a lag in another story or explained in a cathartic explosion when things come to a head in an action sequence. Is the story we telling is why he decided to go? Or is this background that is part of explaining why he is there when later is found to be irrevocably on a ship leaving and things arent what he had hoped for? Thats my thought. This is good material but is this the place in the narrative for it to be presented to the reader?

Yup, very likely started in the wrong place. Oh well, I'm running with it now and could always rewrite later.

I do agree, there is something off about this chapter, but you are in uncharted territory so don't be too hard on yourself. Also Kahoku needs a good smack upside the head, stringing along Loe like that. You did that scene pretty well, and I could almost feel Loe's heart sink when Kahoku mentioned she had a date
