Hey everyone, just letting you know that the Getting Sketchy drawings are underway and will be posted sometime later this week, hopefully.

On an related note, I wanted to ask a question for my followers here on Patreon regarding Getting Sketchy: Thus far I've done this about four times, offering six sketches to all my patrons above the $5 tier. However, each time, the number of requests I've gotten have just barely gone above the six slots offered, despite the offer being open to at least twenty patrons as of this writing. Even when I made a special all-patron offer for the holidays, I only got nine requests total.

Now, I'm not mad or disappointed, more concerned that I'm not engaging with my audience as much as I should. Are the notifications not working for some, perhaps? Are you simply just too busy? Or is there something about the Getting Sketchy event itself that turns people off? If there is, I'd want to know.

Is it the theme for each one that turns people off? The reason I theme each Getting Sketchy event is both to make each one somewhat unique, and to serve as a springboard for creativity- I find it's easier to come up with an idea for a drawing if you have at least some kind of theme or idea to jump off of at the start. For example, if you ask someone to simply tell you a joke, they might have trouble thinking of one, but if you ask them to tell them a joke about, say, monkeys, they'll be able to come up with one much faster. Still, if you find the themes too restrictive, I could start making up polls beforehand with a selection of one-word themes before each Getting Sketchy event.

Either way, I'm starting to consider possibly reducing the number of sketch slots for Getting Sketchy from six to maybe three to four. What are you thoughts?

Honestly, I couldn't begin to say why they aren't more popular. I generally jump at the chance to get a "free" (for a given definition of free since I'm a patron, of course) sketch. The themes are occasionally a little hard to puzzle out (the snake theme actually took some time for me to come up with a concept), but in the end I feel like it creates a more dynamic final image as opposed to the just general character concept sheets that I usually get when I commission you. With that said, coming up with multiple themes and having us vote on them in a poll might help engagement and help people get prepared. Maybe the problem is that people think they don't have enough time to come up with a request that fits the theme? Like, they see that the theme is snakes and they can't immediately come up with an idea to fit that theme, so they just let the opportunity pass, even though they have a week to put in their requests. Maybe people think that there's a bit of "first come first serve" element to it. Assuming that's the case (and admittedly, that's a hefty assumption), putting a poll in place a few days beforehand might help alleviate that, because it'll get people thinking about what they want for a few days BEFORE it's actually time to put in the request.

Hmm, I can see what you mean. Perhaps my latest theme was too specific. Maybe I should go with more general, nebulous themes like "Summer" or "Adventure"?

That could also help. It was easier to come up with something for "celebration" than it was for me to come up with something for "snakes," for example. (I DO have a snake based character, but she's never been drawn before so I didn't have a visual reference to give, and I didn't think it'd be very polite of me to basically lay out a whole character concept in the middle of your comments section the way I do when I ask for a commission.)

Well, i'm not on the 5 tier bit i could give you my opinion. And I agree with Purdy about the topics Maybe you could give more general topics so the idea couldn't be limited to one specific. In any case, i'm sure you'll find a way ;)

omny87

Well, for those cases, you can just say "my OC (no reference available)" and if yours got chosen, I'd ring you up and ask for a reference.

I agree with Purdy's points, though I think another thing to consider may be that people not only might feel they're having a more difficult time coming with an idea for a theme they aren't expecting (even when given enough time), but also may feel more comfortable going for commissions directly where they have more control even if they spend more time writing it down. Personally, I'm often more "shy" when it comes to raffles for a specific theme because it doesn't quite "click" in my mind to publicly expose an idea, so it tends to be more conventional and "basic" than a normal commission, because it's free so you don't want to ask too much, and I can see why people don't want to write something down. Basically, I personally think it has something to do with this being public and both "too" specific (unlike a "give me ANY character and I'll go artistic freedom with them") and "not enough" (unlike a normal commission) and thus it unconsciously causes more mental blocks. Kinda like a sort of uncanny valley for raffles.

Hmm, I can see your point, yeah. Maybe I can do something like "give me your favorite character/OC and I'll draw them" for some of these.

I saw your message. Just forget to reply right away. For my part, if I don't always participate, it's for simple reasons. Either because I haven't had the time to do it... or because I just don't have an idea for the proposed theme. You can have the best theme in the world, if the inspiration is not there... well, it's not there! After... on the "how to make the proposals", I agree with my comrades. If the theme is very restrictive, the proposals will necessarily be limited, but if it is too vague, it can produce the same effect or go in any direction! The best being between the two, targeted the choice while remaining quite free, as proposed for example "feline" rather than cat, it is restrictive, while leaving freedoms. After, either, you continue as you do, or, you make a list of choices to theme, and people vote for the one they like the most, or, you can make a calendar on the next themes that you show us in advance, leaving us time to think about it. After, it all depends on the time you have and your organization.
