This is a really crazy story. I vaguely knew what the song referred to, but it was only during the research while writing chapter 36 that I learned that this guy's suicide allowed his wife to collect his pension benefits, because he died before his criminal sentencing. He gamed the system and won. There is something to respect there.

Robert Budd Dwyer (November 21, 1939 - January 22, 1987) was an American politician. He served from 1965 to 1971 as a Republican member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and from 1971 to 1981 as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate representing the state's 50th district.
