We all know that a weak story and messy screenplay can tank a film...... but the mere presence of John Candy means we didn't waste our time. You'll have a lot more to chew on with Return To Me! YES, I am officially a Return To Me pest! :)

For me, the better Candy "vacation" movie is Summer Rental. Also starring Rip Torn as a pirate of sorts and directed by Carl Reiner. It's not Hughes-ian level amazing or anything, but It is a fun movie that deals about 99% John Candy and it has so much more heart than this movie. Full disclaimer though, I watched The Great Outdoors a LOT growing up. Still love it. But I agree that, in retrospect, it was sort of a missed opportunity with that talent.
