I have a dilemma and I need your help solving it.

Part of why Volume #1 is taking me so long is because I want to update the older pages according to a set of specific rules that I use for pretty much every page past Chapter 4. Volume #1 is going to include Chapters 1-4 (most likely, pending publisher approval yada yada), so there's unfortunately a lot of work to be done there.

These are the rules I'm using:

  • Updating resolution to fit page dimensions
  • Updating word balloons to fit a consistent current format
  • Updating text to match font choices picked for Chapters 5 and beyond.
  • Touching up some of the more egregious examples of poorly-aged art for cleanliness and clarity.

What I'm NOT doing is changing ANY of the text (as much as I might like to for this page and others) and I'm absolutely NOT going to redraw every page, or every panel, or every character. It would take me many additional months, possibly a year or more and I want to release Volume #1 in 2023.

HOWEVER, occasionally I will happen across an example of a poorly-aged drawing that barely even represents the character correctly. Page 3 is an excellent example of that. It's in these cases, particularly at the character's introduction or when they are supposed to be spotlit, that I wonder... should I redraw these panels?

In the examples included on this post, I give you the original Page 3, plus a few different options for how the page will appear in Volume #1.

A. I could update JUST the text and leave the original art completely untouched, saving myself tons of time but ultimately resulting in a slightly lower quality book that might be difficult for the uninitiated at a furcon to just pick up and dive into.

B. I could touch up the characters just a little bit so they at least look a little closer to what they are supposed to look like, while still leaving the original art largely untouched possibly mitigating the situation above by a little bit and not requiring much additional time from me.

C. In addition to the clarity touch-ups, I could -rarely- redraw specific or important panels, bringing in a bit of my current level of artistic skill to those early chapters and potentially beautifying certain pages, requiring the most time from me, but not unreasonably so. However, this may create an obvious, glaring contrast between the updated panels and the original ones that surround it, even despite my efforts to make the new art fit in.

I will be posting a poll here on Patreon and on Twitter to hear what you think I should do. I kinda figure I know what the answer is already, but maybe you'll surprise me!  Vote HERE: Volume #1 Poll | Trick on Patreon

The good news is that once Volume #1 is finished, Volume #2 won't take nearly as long because I won't have to update it as much (except maybe for redrawing some Riley faces just because I want to)
