Hello Patrons,
Your video this week takes a restorative approach to the new year. The winter season invites us to be inside... or bundled up to comfort from the cold.
Note: I filmed this in 4k and the upload is in 1080-- so hopefully you notice the improved quality! If you watch this on the day of post (today = Sunday) then you might need to manually change the quality up to 1080p (use the gear switch on the lower right hand of video).
I had originally filmed a backbend class with the solar flares of Warrior, Plank and Upward Dog. But it just didn't feel quite right. I found inspiration in Shoulderstand, and ended up spending hours warming up for, and practicing the Shoulderstand cycle.
Iyengar says Shoulderstand can be practiced between 1-5min and up to 15minutes, twice a day!
This video will warm up your muscles and prepare your body to take you into Shoulerstand-- Sarvangasana, and Plow-- Halasana. Following the inversion (under 5min) I will guide you through stretches to compensate for the shoulders and neck, to bring ease and balance to the strength in your shoulders, arms, and legs.
Believe it or not, Shoulderstand will tone your legs! I'm actually sore all over-- from my shoulders to my hands, lower back and lower legs. It's a very good, empowering kind of soreness :)
Attached, you will find PDF's:
- Class Map with 4 sequences and 12 poses
- Pose Card with benefits and contraindications of Shoulderstand
Contraindications include neck/spinal cord injury, high blood pressure, glaucoma, and obesity.
Benefits include stress relief by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, deepening the breath, reducing fatigue, and relieving symptoms of anxiety and depression.
I have another video to share asap that is ALL shoulderstand :)
So, get comfy on your rug or yoga mat, and Relax into this powerful Restorative practice.
