The organ-grinder one is playing off the absurd notion that persists even today that somehow beggars or street-performers actually get rich from plying their trade. In tourist places around the world, we are told not to give money to beggars because they probably have a limousine parked around the corner (an actual thing that Air India’s booklet given out on planes in the 1960s assured travellers was true). Of course, just like the Italian organ-grinders in New York or “Gypsy” beggars in Italy, beggars were almost desperately poor.
