He's not great

Comments

Jesper Ohlsson

"there must have been a foreign seducer who seduced her away from me, I mean my wife's loving care! What? I didn't say anything." ...just so many times of Ona sitting in on Martha Washington's bath-times like she's a toddler at risk of drowning, fleetingly glancing at George's straight razor and - once more - suppressing the urge to just go absolutely feral with it on Martha's neck from behind. The actual history of the US is just a long-form Cormac Mccarthy novel.

I look forward to listening to this

Oh boy, my ancestor was John Langdon. Haven't listened yet but I can't wait to hear about how I was wrong to be proud of him!

Anonymous

Well this episode made me glad he couldn't chew.

George Washington, rich asshole. Sounds about right.

Dave seems depressed and angry. More than normal.

Anonymous

Hey he wasn't terrible at the end! That's the most any of us can ask of our ancestors tbh.

Can't wait to see you in Hartford CT or VT, Gareth!

My suggestion is to make this a double feature. Listen to this one and then go listen to the Death of George Washington episode and just laugh and laugh at this asshole dying a ridiculous death.

Don’t do this shit. I’m not. I just had a shingles vaccine and feel like shit. This kind of crap is totally inappropriate.

Tim Kocher

Holy shit that was 7 years ago. Time flies when you’re a Dollop fan…

Doubt y’all play video games but the bootlicking of the founding fathers is portrayed perfectly. Games not that great lol. But you’d enjoy the effort that went into showing how horrible all of that white nonsense was. Bioshock Infinite. They have robot Washington’s that shout cult Christian versions of the founding fathers writings. Hard to explain but very well done 👍

https://youtu.be/FPijJjOnLbY this is just the voice lines separate so u can understand it https://youtu.be/I1JTAooXwn4 it should be noted too that the very first person you kill is a man at a game show where it is revealed to you that the “Lottery” prize you won is first throw. They open the curtain and you the player are offered right or left choices. stone an interracial couple to death with baseballs or throw that baseball at the man presenting the “show”. Regardless of your choice they escape death but you have to choose to free them/help escape they are literally tied up. The leader of the resistance is a black woman trying to free all the non white people that are treated like animals. it has a very clear message throughout that this stupid America (Columbia) in the sky is built on the backs of black people that are essentially slaves. Think the story says that the founder of the city bribed a guy back in the regular USA who tells 1890s-1910s era black people to come “work” for his company. But once they get up to Columbia they’re essentially slaves again. It’s very interesting and might be the first anti racist “decision” in a game. I know it got a lot of press when it came out a decade ago lol

This is one of my favorite games. Just made navy and white earrings, one of which has a bird charm and the other has a cage. There is nuance in the portrayal of the resistance as well, as there are some fractures within it. It shows that violence is necessary to overthrow authoritarianism. They focus on arming leftists, and they even use dynamite - a cool reference to Dollop subject Lucy Parsons. The dictator/leader of the cult is also named Comstock. You could argue that they do too much "both-sidesing" at the end, though. (Thomas, I will only take issue with you saying that the game is "not that great," lol.)

The politics of that game are so interesting. IIRC, Columbia also did some heinous imperialist shit during the Boxer Rebellion. The main character is guilt-ridden for his role as both a Pinkerton and one of the perpetrators at Wounded Knee. They're full-in on "America is a Christofascist empire built on blood."

Very well said! I really do love the writing and think it fits the world and lore of 1 and 2 perfectly. My only complaint was purely on the video game quality aspect. The original trailer was beautiful and they scaled back really hard at the end. I agree with u and other commenter 100% they did an excellent job of painting the nuances of pitting different castes of working people against each other and really surprised me with the path the resistance leader takes. Elizabeth predicting and showing that the entire floating city would declare war on the heathen mainland in the 80s or so was wonderfully put. ALSO final thing. Before the game came out. They ran trailers that pretending to be history channel style documentaries on the “myth” of the floating city of Columbia. Like it was a real thing like Atlantis (at least real in the sense of it wasn’t made up for the game) it was made up for the game of course. But the effort to write it and film it that way was genius.

Shit I found it. Glad it’s real lol felt like a fever dream memory https://youtu.be/L_htchN_NBM
