It’s not a bag for a telescope, it’s a telescope-valise, which is just an expanding suitcase. Check out the “Iron Mountain Baby” for a similar story of a baby in a suitcase, only this one was thrown from a train (he lived!).

I like to think some of the stories from the first page are related. Lady can finally divorce her shit husband, he goes to court because he won’t pay child support, lady puts on a bear head and dumps her kid because no money from its father 😂

A baby left in a valise is also a key plot point of Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ first performed in 1895. Any chance this influenced the parents I wonder?

As a historian, old newspapers are literally my favorite thing to read. They’re so unhinged. Past Times is the best 😂😂

The thing about medical items being left in bodies - it does occasionally happen now, but usually a sponge or something. There's also checks where they have to count every item at the start and the end to make sure they still have them all, so it's less common
