Dave and Gareth! I am a professional bossy person, talented writer-downer, and experienced follow-througher. Would love to talk about working together on some of your admin-type projects. HMU!

Ha! I finally got an answer about lunch.

Hi Dave. I live in Sligo Ireland, you mentioned that you weren't sure if the surf in Ireland was any good, surf on the west coast of Ireland is very good especially the northwest (where I'm from) which is awesome. Hope you get a chance to try it out sometime soon.

Technical Feedback: to whoever does the sound-mixing, my suggestion is to turn Gareth down a bit (perhaps quite a bit) and Dave slightly up. Gareth has a voice that really carries - there's not a lot of bass to it, it's very clear, to the point of being "sharp" when he raises his voice, and played through a phone speaker, for example. When I play episodes through my phone-speaker, and don't want to bother other people, I often have to adjust the volume according to whether its Dave or Gareth who is speaking. Dave often ends up being too soft and quiet, and Gareth often ends up being too loud. Obviously, this is not some kind of backhanded shade; it's purely meant as technical feedback. All voices are different, and sound-engineering is a tricky thing. I unfortunately don't have enough of a technical vocabulary to be helpful here, but perhaps a simple way to start is to have Gareth turn down his "gain" a little bit on his microphone (if possible). Again, really, no shade. Cheers; love.

All I’m saying is if I can work remotely and it’ll get me out of education, I’ll writer downer doer whatever you want. 😁

For mailbags the audio is just recorded through their zoom equivalent, so it's all auto leveled. Are you talking about this ep in particular, or dollop eps? Editor x

Hi, sorry, should have specificed that it's something I've noticed "as of late", so basically since they've started doing remote recording, and on regular episodes. The mailbag levels are fine. I just thought I should float it here, in case others have noticed it too. And if so, there might be a fairly easy fix to it (like adjusting the gain a little on Gareth's mic). My guess is that most people who listen to it without earbuds do so through their phone speakers, and I think even expensive models tend to favor gain/"sharpness" over bass, for example (there's only so much room in a phone). So in that sense a "does it sound alright through a phone-speaker?" could be a good general test on where to put the levels (rather than with a good home entertainment stereo-setup). It's not a big deal, and I hope it doesn't come across as such (or as being Karen:ish). I just found myself having to adjust the volume up and down a lot more recently, for whatever reason. //Edit: I should probably also say - before I set sound-engineers on possibly pointless tasks - that I do have a new phone as of a few months ago, so it's entirely possible that this particular model - Nokia XR20 - has very "gain-heavy" loud-speakers, and I'm just noticing it in particular in combination with Gareth's voice. So, it could be a "me-problem". //Edit 2: I found an example here: https://www.patreon.com/posts/515-rene-robert-61005366 Even on my computer speakers, there's a pretty noticeable difference in levels/gain/"volume" between Gareth's mic and Dave's (Dave is fairly soft, Gareth is very amplified). So, it might not entirely be my new phone.

Can the Writer Downer Do-er also screen repeat questions for Mailbags?

Is the Birmingham show you keep calling your worst show ever Mad Jack Mytton? How come it was bad? I enjoy the episode for jokes and content, found it interesting and funny, can’t really fathom why it would have gone over poorly?

Ahh, yes I'm the video editor so don't do the actual proper audio eps. I just told Gareth and apparently a few people have said that, we'll sort it! Thanks Jesper, Editor x

Glad I could help. It's often a little difficult to give technical feedback without it coming across as nagging, or being entitled to service. Technical stuff is also prettydifficultto source, and sometimes it actually is just user-error, rather than something "the source" can do anything about. In any case, hopefully it will be sorted. I noticed in the video that Dave, even when he shouts, isn't much louder than when he talks, whereas Gareth frequently sounds blown out. One factor could just be down to microphone usage; Dave has an arm, so he has to lean forward to speak, whereas Gareth has a handheld mic that he often holds very close to his mouth (especially when excited). Having an arm or table stand for Gareth could possibly go a long way to mitigate the problem (along with a little bit of audio adjusting).
