Listening to the episode at work, and the Bluetooth connection to my headphones glitched. The great sound bite my coworkers got was “oh so you’re SUPER racist” …. 😅 Luckily my workplace does very intentional DEI&B work/education, so people were like, “yeah…”

..as a european, I didn't know that "can't we all get along" was from the Rodney King case. As noted, it was very prevalent in 90's "detached-slacker-irony" media products. I am aware that chiding people doesn't work, and especially not retroactively (there's no point in bringing Jay Leno to task for a hack monologue he made in the early 90's, in the year 2022). Still, re-telling this story into the actual context of what happened was great (though very sad), to hear. ..It's a bummer that King is dead, and people who unequivocally should be, aren't. love; cheers.

I'm gonna listen to this right before bed.

I'm only about 25 minutes into this but the way the cops are reacting as if it's no big deal reminds of a comment that someone made about how not one cop who was there that night reported anything out of the ordinary when they finished their shift. This vicious beating was just not notable to any of them. Just another day on the job.

JFC this happened a few years before I was born and I had no idea how bad it was. I didn't know it was physically possible to beat someone so badly their fillings came out of their teeth. This one is going to stick with me for a while. I knew about it vaguely but I had no idea just how brutal it was. Like holy shit. Fucking ACAB indeed.

I'm now at minute 57 and Dave is talking about how it's a common practice for cops to say that the black men that they were facing appeared to have almost superhuman strength. A great example of this is Darren Wilson, the cop who shot Michael Brown. He claimed that Brown as like a superhero who kept absorbing the bullets and getting angrier and angrier, which is why he needed to shoot an unarmed 18 year old over and over again. He also said that the initial encounter, when he claims that Michael Brown "attacked" him through the car window (almost certainly bullshit) was scary because of how huge Brown was. Darren Wilson is 6'4" tall, the same height as Brown. There was a significant weight difference (Brown was about 292 pounds compared to Wilson's 210 pounds) but this was not a gigantic man facing off against a tiny dude.

I have been waiting for Rodney King’s story to be told for so long. This story broke my spirit and I wasn’t even in my teens…. Thank you for covering it. RIP Rodney King.

And a Happy Thanksgiving to you as well…just starting it and I’m going to have to take breaks during this one.

Need to do Reginald Denny’s story as well. Please.

Ah, I love the cheerful ones. Really cements your faith in humanity.

There’s a line from The Wire that McNulty yells when he’s mad at how the system lets people get away with dirty shit that has always stuck with me, “Everybody stays friends and everybody gets paid.” It’s why they don’t fire people, they let/force them to resign.

Great ep, but on a side note, where are the Chollops? I keep getting notifications for them and emails, but I haven’t seen the last two come up. One was about Brexit and there was another one I got today.

Yeah, that whole aspect is not just super racist, it’s also unfortunately, a very real belief. It’s such an insidious leftover from slavery, the idea that black people can take more pain, have tougher skin, are stronger and therefore require more force to deal with. It’s currently still in some medical books. I would not be surprised if it was outright said during police training, then or now. I’m in Canada and only a few months ago, I had a nurse tell me at my 3rd chemo appointment that I had “tough skin,” as the reason she was having trouble getting the IV in. I asked 3-4 subsequent nurses and anesthesiologists after—while they were poking me—if they agreed with that assessment, all said no. One was so outwardly confused they wondered why the nurse would say that since it wasn’t true. I didn’t explain, I was too tired. Some understood though.
