As someone who already knew this story I was cackling waiting for the horror

Ruairidh Lunny

Radium Girls is an episode I revisit regularly so I was braced for this one!😵

If only I hadn't already googled him a couple of months ago when I first heard of him. Oh well.

"MBq" means "mega-becquerel". The becquerel is the unit of radioactivity, equal to one decay per second, so the nuclei in Ebenezer's body were decaying 57 million times a second. That's a lot.

Just wanted to say before I listened: good convergence with your Radium Girls episode! I read the book about them, which is heartbreaking but also really good (your episode about them definitely piqued my interest to read more, much like a lot of my “library”), but I seem to recall (I read it like five years ago) this being the guy who basically brought actual visibility to the dangers of radium and how it was killing these teenagers and very young women who nobody cared about (seriously, I seem to recall his plight as being the reason why the radium girls’ families got any money whatsoever for care after death. Jesus Christ). “The radium water worked well until his jaw fell off.” Yup, I remember that quote entirely. Thank you for putting this out! I do a lot of Dollop “research” in my spare time. So many of your episodes have piqued my interest in the topics discussed and have led to me reading more about them, whether your cited sources or others. Thank you, Dave, you’re great.

Same! I read the book about them and it was really good. It’s literally just called the Radium Girls (if you listen to audiobooks, I recommend playing it at 1.5x speed; otherwise it’s unbearable). I haven’t listened to the Dollop episode about it in a long time, should probably do that. I just didn’t like them kind of blaming these women who didn’t have an idea that licking the paintbrushes would eventually kill them. This is not really a critique of Dave and Gareth; I think it’s more just a 20/20 hindsight comment about, “these poor women! They literally thought that them glowing would make them more appealing to their boyfriends, etc.” It was probably one of the most emotionally devastating things I’ve ever read.

About 10 years ago, I was staying in a hotel in an old spa town somewhere in Bavaria. The spa menu proudly posted its various radon offerings including an in room radon baths and visits to nearby natural radon infused caves. The photos of the latter showed guests lying naked on ledges in a cave. I’ve never been one to turn down a nice spa treatment, but I passed on this one!

Your John Brown episodes were awesome. Thank you.

Why did I have to google it 🤢

This just reminded me of my godmother’s family that has a place in Radium, BC (aka Radium Hot Springs). It’s about 1.5hrs away from Banff, AB. I don’t know how I never made the connection, until now, between the village name and the Radium girls and why the village might be called that. According to Wikipedia the radon levels are “inconsequential”, but I wonder if they ever touted the small traces of it as a bonus or a beneficial health thing along with the mineral water. They must have if they want so far as to name the hot springs and the village that.

Just the "lying on cave ledges naked" part would have been enough for me to decline😄 That story made me laugh, it's just the complete absurdity of it all! "How can we get closer to radon? Let's rub our naked bodies against it! It'll add years to our lives"
