I just kept wishing John Clarke was still alive to make an LA version of his TV series “The Games”

After the '84 Olympics my mom's cousin bought some furniture that had been used in the Olympic village, and the fabric was the most glorious 80's mix of pink and teal that I've ever seen.

This gives me 10 cent beer night vibes except this time I'm sad. GREAT EP.

This had me thinking of similar bullshit happening in KC. So we are one of the cities hosting the World Cup in 2026 and Missouri just passed a law that will make the tickets tax free. But they’re planning on renovating Arrowhead stadium at a cost of 50 million, which alot of folks are saying is a huge underestimate by the city. KC also has alot of unhoused folks.

Great episode. I was 20 for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. It was the only time in history the Sydney train system ran on time over those weeks! Lost $millions - just like every other city other than LA. Built the Olympic village over contaminated land. *sniff* so proud!

....Even if you're not "into sports", the willingness to create brand new "one-or-two-use" mega-structures that either get demolished, or left to linger as modern ghost-towns, sorta deflates the notion that "leftists" have to spend any time justifying "extravagant, pie-in-the-sky" spending. I'm not "into sports" to any degree, but the phenomenon of "The Olympics" is a fairly radical phenomenon, in the sense that whoever "gets the bid to host" inevitably end up doing "Soviet-era-big-projects", with roughly the same sense of urgency (and subsequent abandonment).

This episode is what made the olympics finally totally jump the shark for me. I always knew they were kind of evil but not exactly how destructive it is for cities to host them. There's gotta be a way for cities to host them in a constructive way, but the people organizing them don't care about the communities they have them in. It's just another grift.

As someone who was around at the time of the LA games (and the Munich, Montreal, and Mexico City games), I had to sit up at the idea that Uberoth didn't want the games festooned in red, white, and blue, because if he said that, he was a goddamn liar; those games showed up on America's TV screens drenched in red white and blue with frothy über-patriotic commentary from the commentators so bad that it felt like if Leni Reifenstahl was filming it all for Reagan's regime

Can we get a “Dave Watches Mary Lou Retton win the Womens All Around Final” GoFundMe going please?
