What's up, homies! Welcome to the start of our 2023 reaction series. This will be a big year with tons of great films and series. We're hoping to cover as many of them as possible. To kick off the new year, we're starting with the new HBO series, The Last of Us.

We knew this would be a unique experience for us, especially given our very limited playtime with the original game. But we hope this adaptation sets the standard for all future video game adaptations.

I know you lads haven't played the games but I can tell you a lot of the shots were almost ripped frame to frame from the game and it was impressive how much they've managed to capture. Seeing the trailer months ago I was optimistic for the show but with how bad video game adaptions usually are it's always hard for me to get really excited for the big screen stuff. After that first episode I am absolutely sold.

Yellucs

What a fantastic show! The best pilot ep I've seen in some time.

Nurhadi Roshaimi

Starting 2023 and I'm on EDGE with TLOU.. daaammnnn.. Gotta see the whole season b4 jumping into the game

Jake Samuels

Really looking forward to seeing the rest of this show as it comes out. It was so good that I was all-too-eager to re-watch it almost immediately for your reaction.

Jonathan Frederick

Hearing names like Tommy... LOVE IT. Seeing Sarah... HATE IT.

I haven't played these games but I have watched gameplay of both games (plus the DLC). So while my viewing was a passive viewing, there were still 1st-person video game elements to it. Meaning that it's a bit easier to identify w/ the character you are controlling. When the 1st game opens, you control Sarah & see her last day through her eyes. When you switch over to controlling Joel, many of the gameplay ppl audibly said "I'm Joel now." So that element of "I'm Joel" or "I'm Ellie" is ingrained in the video game medium. You identify with the main characters because you "are" them during the game. So I was interested in seeing how they adapted this game into a tv series since tv and movies are a passive medium. This adaptation, so far, works so well. It truly feels like the writers/producers fundamentally understand what parts of a video game only work in that medium & what elements from the game they have to leave in unchanged. All the small changes they have made thus far seem to only strengthen the internal logic of the narrative. For instance, the whole Robert arc in the game is mostly there to give the players time to figure out the game mechanics, controls, and the rules of the world. In the tv series, they've streamlined his role so well. In the game he sold weapons to the Fireflies, weapons that Tess & Joel had already paid for. The switch to a car battery is quite a genius change. And in the game Joel & Tess weren't already planning a cross-country trip to find Tommy. But this change just strengthens how Joel could pull off a trek like that: he's already been preparing for it. The actors are killing it in their roles. The art direction is nailing the look from the game. The fact that they kept the original guitar music from the game gave me goosebumps. I'm super pumped for this show. And I'm excited to see guys who know nothing about the narrative to experience it for the first time. It's why I watch 1st-playthroughs on Youtube: to re-experience people's first reactions to one of my favorite stories. I can't wait to see your reactions to different parts of this story.

Jonathan Frederick

Oh my god. The way they did Sarah's death. Wow wow wow wow. It was almost exactly like the game. The writers cared so much about the game. It shows so much. Oh my actual fuck.

Jonathan Frederick

Did you guys notice Joel was still wearing the watch his daughter got fixed even 20 years later and it doesnt even work anymore.

Ronin Unchained

As someone who loves the game and Joel and Ellie are in my Top 10 favorite fictional characters of all time, this honors them and the story. Moments, dialogue right out of the game! So glad you fellas dug it. Now play the game's remastered version.

Matthew Garcia

For real man. Both TLOU games are my all time favorite games, and this is hitting everything on point. I was already hyped and now even more so after this episode. I hope everyone who was upset about the casting aren't anymore cause its perfect.

Matthew Garcia

So the whole thing with Joels daughter was actually in the game and was also how it opened. The shirt she is wearing is actually a replica of the one she wore in the game! I absolutely love that they are paying attention to small details like that. I think the problem most adaptations have is they try to hard to have their own identity and stray away from what made people love the game, so far the show is basically a scene for scene reenactment of the game and its great. TLOU is my favorite game of all the time, and seeing this getting the love and care it deserves makes me so happy.

I just started playing the game a few weeks ago to get ready for the show, and man what a great pilot! I love how you guys kept saying how it felt like a videogame, and I completely agree. The fact that the camera moves similarly to how the game's does really provides that immersion I think. Also, what Agustin said about how the camera never leaves the ground so you are always with the characters. This game really lends itself to a show like this. I know that good video game adaptations are few and far between, and I think that this was the perfect next step for The Last of Us. Cinematic games like this were made to feel immersive and the storytelling is very important. This show is carrying and balancing those things so well, while also making smaller moments more significant. I am pumped to see this play out!

Prime Time

The Last of Us is one of, if not my favorite videogame ever and I'm so so excited to watch this show with the homies even though we know everything that will happen. Cheers to 100k!!

Dayna Dyson

I knew next to nothing about this...never played the game and only knew the casting and the general premise...saying that I absolutely LOVED the first episode. It was shot so well and was so tense and emotional...can't wait to see what happens next

Casey Williams

I have a feeling this may turn out to be one of my fav shows of the year. I know nothing about the story, so really looking forward to the world building!

Aisha Kenya

Hector, to answer a few of your questions in the beginning…Sara is wearing a Halican Drops tshirt (same one she wore in the game) And we normally don’t have basements here in TX, it’s very rare because of our soil. It contains a lot of rocks, so digging is real expensive. The cool thing is they made the house almost a replica of the on in the game and spent so much time on the small details! What an awesome episode, I’m so hype for what’s coming next!

Shane Kimbrell

This was the best adaptation from a video game I've seen so far. I'm in love. There were enough changes or additions that were intriguing, such as the tendrils and Joel's flashback/PTSD. There are scenes and quotes ripped directly from the game and they're perfect. This game made me fall back in love with gaming back when it came out 10 years ago and I'm in love with the show so far. We are in for a great ride.

jiro_Moriarty

It was amazing watching how they kept certain scenes pretty much exactly like it was in the game ("Drugs. I sell hardcore drugs" I love they kept that line from the game!) and also seeing how the added info/scenes gave the story much more depth.

Ms.Sherrice

I am not a videogame player of any game let alone The Last of Us. Not into Zombie or horror movies...but this is a really solid show. I'm in, but will only be watching it from behind my hands with Hector and Augustin. I know this is right up Adam's alley.

heroesreforged

There are some great clips going around on Twitter, shared on our discord, that show the comparisons. Stunning. They really wanted to do right by the fans while also doing right by the story. It can be a really tricky balance but it seems like they’re nailing it.

Guys I just watched the entire episode again with you! what a great eexperience, I assume someone in the previous comments told you but the actress that plays Marlene is the only one of the actors that are repracing their role in the games, she did the motion capture and the voice of the character! I´m really happy that you guys are reacting to this... It´s gonna be a hell of a ride!! Greetings from Argentina!

Peter Bode

As a big fan of the game, this was very cool to watch your guys' reaction to the opening scenes of this series. Cheers!

Justin Perlow

This reaction was phenomenal and I couldn't stop laughing! Also kept getting Cloverfield vibes from this!

Brian Campbell

Why did you all get me to watch this show with zombies who do Parkour??

Peter Evans

Your alls reactions were amazing! The show seems true to the GAME TLOU. I've never played, but I watched many twitch streamers play it and knew the content. Yet the show's cinematics and almost verbatim opening made it so much more compelling. Also the song at the end alludes to what's instore for us all. A great ride ;)

Bart De Vos

I subbed to Patreon for the uncut reactions of this show. :) Love your superhero reactions, but it's really cool to see this from a perspective of people who don't have much experience with the game. I swear all other reactions are just people pointing out they recognise things from the game, not focussing on the story. :P Keep up the great work guys.

That's what made the show appealing to us. We didn't realize how small the "reactors who are watching the show but haven't played the game" bubble is haha.

As someone who hasn't played the video game, I also appreciate your perspectives. I picked up on a lot more now watching for a second time. Btw, the song at the end of the episode is Depeche Mode's "Never Let Me Down" One of my favorite songs.

heroesreforged

Ah, those little subtle changes are very interesting, but super well thought out to help strengthen the story or justify actions and motivation. Well done.

heroesreforged

I saw a video that touches on this and how they alter or change the story and events because they think people who played the game won't want to see a faithful adaptation that's just the game come to life, when in fact, that is what people would like to see.

Audrey Mozdzen

With Ellie pointing out, "Your watch is broken", forecasting her role as his new "daughter". Just such good writing!

discobean

I have not watched this reaction yet, just the intro, but I cannot tell you how glad I am that you guys are watching this and how excited I am for you to experience the last of us story. Love the game loads and love you guys. This is a ramble just thank you and hope you enjoy the first episode as much as I did!!! All the best

Angel

Long time viewer and it’s my first time watching an uncut reaction and I laughed so hard I love you guys and I have so much more reactions I can watch❤️
