Second episode was better than the first one! I can't help feeling they should have either used a new character as the protagonist for us to follow, a nobody who becomes entangled in the story, or a semi-unknown. Picking Galadriel was a risky choice, because we all have our expectations with her. I am not sure the choice will pay off. I want to like her, and actually I do, I just don't see Galadriel in her yet and that frustrated me a little. But it's a beautiful show and I'll continue to watch it, hoping it just gets better from here and they build her up to become closer to the ethereal wise elf we knew. But I must say, I'm more invested in the story of the healer and the elf who fancy each other and found some burned village, and her son who likes to play with dark swords

Thurrak

To be fair the Galadriel we already know is a couple THOUSAND years older..

OleTad

I think they Dwarves discovered the legendary mithril prior to these first 2 episodes and want to keep that knowledge from the Elves and that's what is causing that sense of paranoia in King Durin. Maybe he looks at the discovery as an advantage over the Elves in a time when they aren't on the same footing militarily, or technologically. I'd even go a step further and include the knowledge that they know they fucked up by digging so deeply and woke something up in the deep parts of the mountain. Maybe they are worried the Elves will come down on them violently if word got out.

Carol Rozendo

Sure, I'm not denying that, but most of us still guard that idea of her. And at this point of the show she is already at least hundreds of years old, so it's not like she's a young impetuous summer child 😂

Jon Allanson

I am really enjoying this show. This episode was great. More amazing visuals and music - the production values are incredible. And, I am so looking forward to how the story of these characters develops.

Martinbumms

Regarding to her culture she is very young. I'm a bit confused by your comment, you know that people evolve during their lifetime, right? You can see hints of the Galadriel we know from the movies in this younger version and as time progesses, these parts will grow. It would be so weird to show a Galadriel who is already the finished movie version.

I was not expecting to see the orcs this early in the show, which was great. The fight scene with Bronwyn and her son was my favorite in this episode. I'm also interested how they will develop Arondir's character in the show. Plus the music in both these episodes are spectacular. Really love how it drives the story. I too like how they are making the material more digestible for viewers who aren't well versed in the literature.

Reason the streaming looks "SO GOOD" for these episodes.... AMAZON owns AWS which I am SURE they allotted ALL the bandwidth to!!

Nurhadi Roshaimi

At this point, I'm just enjoying the stunning visual aesthetics and cinematography (Physical media release pleeaaasseee for the love of Princess Disa & family) and the score, music and sound effects which reflects most of the characters' dialogue and actions. As for mystery sky-man? lemme digest it over some scooby snacks.. don't reveal too early, I'm basking in the suspense.

I really liked this episode. I enjoyed seeing the dwarves and now I think they are my favorite. Also Elrond is growing on me as well. My only issue remains with Galadriel unfortunately. I just can't get into her which sucks because I loved Cate Blanchett in that roll. I realize they're different people but she is just lacking something. But I will probably watch this again

I am not a fan of The Hobbit (films) mainly because it was such an obvious money-grab by the studio, so I wasn't paying much attention to this show, but a friend told me some of what was in these first 2 episodes so I decided to give it a chance and I have to say I am pretty impressed so far. With regard to the length of the series... Amazon just had to commit to multiple seasons to secure the license from Tolkien's estate, but they have never put a number of seasons on it - other people just looked at the amount they paid ($250 million) and decided that must mean 5 seasons. The show will need to be pretty huge to justify the alleged $700+ million budget for this first season but it's off to a strong start.

heroesreforged

The Hobbit films might've been a money grab, but Peter Jackson and the cast and crew still gave it their all. Star Wars and The Hobbit have quite a bit in common when it comes to original trilogies and prequel trilogy expectations haha

I am loving where they are going with the show, and when you hover over the screen at some points and it tells you where they're getting some of the details or expand on more lore, and I love it. No idea who the stranger is at all!

2023-04-28 21:05:28 Not to get into it too deeply, but when you take a relatively short book (maybe half the page count of any of the LotR volumes) and stretch it into 3 films, it feels an awful lot like a money grab. Maybe Peter & Co. could only get the money from the studio if they did it that way, and I am certain they put the same effort into it they put into LofR, but it doesn't interest me regardless. However, the fact that I don't like something doesn't make it bad - I finally figured out that I'm not the arbiter of what's good or bad... something far too many of our fellow nerds have not yet grasped.

I have seen an theory that The Stranger could End up being a Balrog. With the analogies to fire and death and those creatures being like the wizards, I could see it.

I have quibbles with some of the depictions of the Elder Days we are given, but accept that is because they don't have access to the Silmarillion and other sources. One real objection. The Valar extended the invitation to sail to the uttermost West to all elves, Gil-Galad did not have that power in his gift. Also, Galadriel knew she was banned from that voyage hence the importance of her rejection of the one ring. "I pass the test" and the Valar relented and allowed her passage. Sorry the fate of Finrod, one of the most the heroic acts in the legendarium is devalued. But, hey, they can do what they can and I'm loving it. It's great to be back in Tolkien's world. The objections to "woke" casting is a symptom of sick individuals. crawl back into the void prepared for Morgoth and his followers. Gosh, this is so much more typing than I expected!

This is going to be a fun ride.

heroesreforged

Oh, nice! We didn't get a chance to see that with our watchalong. Looks like we need to watch it again.

Roman Penna

Amazon has it with some shows, the 1st Season of The Boys does it as well. But I usually only look when I'm doing a 2nd watch, otherwise it is too distracting for me.

This IS young Galadriel. That's her persona but it's not the persona we know from the LotR where she is wiser and older. But as others have said you have to have lived through some peril to get to be as wise as she is when she is older. The Galadriel in the show isn't there yet and that's why she is how she is.

Carol Rozendo

@Martinbumms what part confused you? I'm hoping to see other sides of Galadriel in the character. I hope they build her up to start showing other sides of the character. So far the show has not shown me any glimpse of her other side, but if you think they did, good for you...

Felicia B

Haha it was so much fun seeing Hector and Adam get excited and pointing things out from the movies. And all of your reference points are perfect Hector. But the highlight is seeing Agustin’s face light up during moments that are call backs to the books. And I also thought Durin and Elrond were going to have a drinking contest 😂 glad it wasn’t just me, Agustin!

heroesreforged

Yeah, despite the movies not being connected there's still opportunities where the books, movies and series can have some overlap in their own respective versions.

There are different versions as to why Galadriel didn’t go back to Valinor though. In one the ban was lifted for everyone but her. In another she just chose to stay due to her love for Celeborn, in another it’s said she thought it her duty to stay until Sauron was vanquished. They obviously made her “saying no” more dramatic here for the show, which makes sense for tv. In my head cannon the ban was lifted for all after Morgoth and she just chose to stay for her own reasons.

smarie

I think they were just saying she is still very young and hasn’t evolved to the Galadriel we know from LOTR. Even with the show’s time compression, LOTR Galadriel is still over 3,000 yrs away from where we are now. There are several events in this time period and some the show will add in more than likely (since they’ve shown to not have happened yet) that will likely change her and effect her deeply. She IS very wise, but also determined and very strong willed. I think we’ll see her grow and develop into the more ethereal, composed, and wise Galadriel we know. Or at least on the precipice of it if this show ends with the end of the 2nd age

Carol Rozendo

@smarie I hear you. Nice that you are satisfied with that rationalization, but it didn't work for me. Not gonna pretend just to agree with the others, you know? I think the negativity that is going on online is horrible and not deserved, but I don't think I should be obligated to not have any kind of criticism just because of that. The show got there 80% for me. So far, 20% is lacking. Great for those who think it is at 100%, but it's not my case.

Philip Smith

Totally agree, the Professor changed so much so often, it's hard to keep track :). I like your idea that she stayed for love, but I feel the text of LoTR is more in tune with a ban. But, this is a new interpretation and I'm happy to go with the flow. I like what we've had so far and have high hopes going forward. :)

Thurrak

So I figured out that Prince Durin IV is Gimli's Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Great Grandfather. lol 14 generations down the line.

Jake Samuels

I had a little bit of a hard time getting into the first episode (probably because of all the setup), so I'm really glad that they released the first two at once, because I was definitely invested by the end of the second one.

Corey Strable

Hector: "That's Gandalf!" also Hector: "That's Sauron" also Hector: "That's Saruman" :D
