Ian Smith

Yup,the Daleks clearly improved their propulsion ability over the years :) Bear in mind, also, that they were never envisaged to become such iconic enemies; so the concept of them appearing in more than one story hadn't been considered up to this point. Ian's surname IS Chesterton - but the Doctor frequently gets it wrong (Chesterfield; Chessington etc) This story (although perfectly solid) is a good example of science-fiction storytelling of that era: Ugly = evil; beautiful = good. Things aren't quite that simplistic today (the 'misunderstood and sympathetic' Dalek in Revived series 1,for example). Nevertheless,I love how they gave us a glimpse of that nasty squid creature so early in the series run - and Ian clambering into the casing and imitating a Dalek is wonderful, and the first intentionally funny scene in the series, imo.

Thanks for the clarification on Ian's surname! I kind of love that the Doctor gets it wrong (in my opinion, purposely). It reminds me of how the 9th and 10th refer to Mickey.
