I agree with your opinion of Captain Jack. He wasn't really needed in order to resolve the story; but he was the creation of RTD, who instructed Moffat to write him in. Nonetheless,it's interesting to have someone in the Tardis who responds to Rose's flirtations. The Doctor, while very protective and caring toward his companions,is essentially an asexual being - Jack,on the other hand,is very much the opposite :D Although the final fifteen minutes are superb,I find that the 'mummy' stuff - VERY effective in Part 1 - starts to get a little repetitive. In part this was due to the episode under-running.and Moffat had to quickly write some extra 'more of the same' scenes in order to pad it out (the whole sequence in the Lab with the tape recorder). In the final dancing scene,it's actually John Barrowman's feet that you see in the close-ups with Billie Piper,as he's a trained dancer while Ecclestone is not.

Yeah, I obviously love the tension and little moments between Rose and the Doctor, but it certainly doesn't seem like a typical romantic love type of connection between them. For me, it was so creepy that it didn't quite reach a level of repetitiveness that made it less effective. I did find it interesting that by the end of the episode (once we realize the truth), it moved from being creepy to just heartbreaking. But, that's great writing for you. It's also interesting to know about the tape recorder scene. I actually think that's one of my favorite scenes from these two episodes. That's a fun little fact about it being John's feet. :)

yeah elements of jacks character from this episode definitely did not age great. i think what I like abt his presence in it is that he, more than adam or mickey, pushes the doctor and rose to have some conversations that they might have kept "dancing around" (pun intended) otherwise. that convo they have before he teleports them onto his ship.... the chemistry is insANE. I also think rose is just a naturally flirtatious person and I do love seeing her and jacks friendlier interactions, they can be sweet too

I completely agree that the chemistry in that scene was off the charts! I definitely agree that Rose is also just flirtatious by nature. But, thinking back to when I was around her age, I was honestly the same way. I didn't string guys along like she's done to Mickey a few times, but I did flirt with just about any guy I found remotely attractive. lol
