Year 7 at Kingswood is over, and that means it's time for end-of-year reports. These originally started out as a list of classes, with the grades each of the boys got. I did it just as a character-building exercise to help me understand what each of the characters was good/bad at, but from there I decided to expand a little.

Long story short, they expanded a lot! They became full-on proper end-of-year reports for each of the main eight. Each report includes:

  • Individual reports for each subject, with a grade from 0 to 5 stars, plus grade overview
  • Feedback from extracurricular activities
  • Comments from relevant staff members on social activity, discipline, wellbeing and Headmaster's overview of the year
  • Comments from mentor
  • Thoughts on successes and areas to improve, written by the student

A large majority of what's in the report has never featured in the story and is not overly relevant to the storyline, but it was still great to be able to show a full picture of their year at the school. Producing these also prompted me to make the school crest, just to make them look a little more official (I know it's pretty mediocre, I'm a writer not a designer!)

Aside from being fun (yes, I enjoy this sort of stuff, I'm a geek and proud) writing these helped inspire a lot of ideas for Year 8. So if you're inclined to read this sort of thing, I hope you enjoy.

For reference, just to help imagine it in the Kingswood reality, the report is printed as a little A5 booklet and each student is given a copy to take home with them at the end of the year.

Wow, not many straight A students in 1.01 ... or any for that matter. I would suggest more learning and less sexy times, but in reality I would prefer it to be the other way around :D So I guess as long as the average is above 3, that should be good enough for our boys hehe.

Interesting point on the grades. Something that is hinted at but never really stated outright is that Kingswood is very much a school for gifted boys. That means their standards are much higher than your average school, so a boy getting 2 stars for a final grade at Kingswood would likely be getting the equivalent of a B at a normal school. It's something that will be explored more in later books, as the boys begin to realise their own potential, but well observed. Although the reports were written just as a bit of fun, these grades really helped inspire a few storylines for book two. Anyway, so glad you read them and thanks for commenting x Matt

I am not yet through with the reports - reading one per day. It's a nice review on the first season of Kingswood - and some news about the guys. But is it possible that you mixed up the German and the French teacher?

Glad you're enjoying, but there's no mistake. The German teacher is French and the French teacher is German! The students find it hilarious. It's mentioned in an interview with Mr Richter I'll be posting soon.
