Galabu, a big cow, but not. As a rule, drakes don't eat or harm reptilians of ANY kind because they are considered "cousins." They really lucked out with the local grazing fauna when it comes to Galabu. Long lived, friendly, generous and nurturing. Everything they could want.

In gratitude towards these beings generously sharing their milk with the Nytrek [drake people] they protect these massive, gentle creatures. All colonies have at least one herd of Galabu on premises. [herds can be up to 10 adults w/their young] People keep them on a personal level as well for all sorts of things. While some of the more elegant and flighty, or aggressive creatures took time and nurturing to bond with, Galabu were the instant connection made with drakes arriving on Io for the first time.

As ALL drakes have a desperate desire for milk [due to being unable to produce it] they were quite ecstatic.

Galabu produce ridiculous milk quantities and it makes for fine cheese, milk based alcohol, breads and much more. They are only milked by hand to insure the animal isn't harmed, and they are never fully drained as mother Galabu need to feed their calves too.

Think of them as the milk maids of old. Mothers who produce enough milk to share with other mothers infants. [a phenomenon thousands of years old in human culture and still existing today]

Unlike the despicable things we do to cattle on earth, Galabu are not confined, restrained and force bred. They breed on their terms and only when mature enough to do so. Drakes do not interfere with their mating habits whatsoever, nor do they steal the calves from the mother.

As they live in herds, they will take turns feeding all calves. This lets the other mothers have time to graze and rest. Calves are born with a rounded, soft beak [like baby birds] they harden as the calf ages and grows and by weaning, the beak is strong enough to crush wood with ease.
