In the game this was based on, after doing out best to "mend" the rickety bridge, everyone still had to take strength rolls to cross it, which in DnD is pretty much how you kill a level one wizard. It's a funny system, in that a lot of what you "save" against is determined by your class, and later, whether you have a Paladin in the group.
