In the game this is based on, we actually made it across the chasm by using a loose interpretation of the "mending" spell and pieces of an old rope bridge that was still present at the site. It really did raise the question, though: how many chunks of a bridge can you remove from a bridge before "mending" no longer makes it a functional bridge again? I have no idea, the GM wasn't totally sure either, and the comic's way of doing magic makes it necessary to take a slightly alternate approach even if a bridge were present.

Well, in 5th edition D&D Mending is limited to a break or tear that is no larger than 1 foot in any dimension. In 3.5 it's limited to an object weighing no more than 1 pound. In neither case is it supposed to work on something with missing pieces. It's one of those cantrips that sounds useful but tends to be insufficient when you actually need it.
