I think one of the most important rules in fiction is that death has to be permanent if your story ever intends to tangle with the concept. Magic, especially, requires limits and costs or else the viewer finds themselves wondering why the hero didn't just abuse their supernatural abilities to solve everything well in advance of the problems. And among the best logical reasons I can think of for death being permanent is the notion that death only needs patience.
In a setting where nothing is truly immortal, Death is the end-all, be-all. Yet even as the mice give Benny this answer, I'll remark I enjoy the stories of how lenient Hades often was with heroes. Because although he was willing to part with the souls that roamed his domain, he always knew they'd come back. It's just lending, and it never made him too upset.
