In the script, Hangman was actually supposed to cut a small piece from the cake, and while his back was turned Benny was just going to run off with the rest of it. In this scenario, Benny steals the cake while the camera isn't on him, abusing the power of the 4th wall and, honestly, rightfully confusing Hangman who was directly in front of him a second ago.

But given all Hangman's seen, this isn't even the 5th most peculiar thing he's known to happen to a cake.
