I hope it's clear in this section that the mouse is basically explaining that there are exchange rates for intangible things like charm and beauty. It's a lot of text for one page, but it was important to both convey the story and explain how things went wrong in relation to the mice. Selma's story itself isn't the central issue in this book, so it needs to be addressed and then moved beyond.
