In terms of messing with dark arts and evil magic, I think there's two approaches. To carefully, slowly, methodically unlock the ancient evil and destroy all life, or to do all it once in a bold act of unthinking ignorance. As long as it's the same both ways, there's no harm in starting by throwing the mysterious thing in the fire.
