For me, this is the best live-action Batman movie ever made. It’s the only one with the strength of the director’s convictions and vision. It’s Batman as nihilist nightmare and that’s cool. Now, BATMAN RETURNS is not the best Batman movie, period. That honor goes to BATMAN: MASK OF THE PHANTASM from 1993, based on Batman: The Animated Series, which is the best version of the characters ever created, including the comics.
