Hi everyone! Here's the full-length reaction to Aliens! Pheewwwwww, this was a ride! And I say this at the end of my reaction, but I genuinely have no clue which movie I like more... they both were so good for different reasons. So hopefully it's okay that I don't have a favourite.

Please grab a copy of the movie on your end to watchalong with me. Here is the direct link to my watchalong. I watched Aliens through Disney+. EDIT: I watched the theatrical release as this is what is on D+.

Thanks for watching! Looking forward to chatting about this one.

I’m not sure how many people can choose between them, popular opinion maybe the sequel. I for one am not sure. I love the slow pace and build up of the first, the claustrophobic nature of it. The set design and sound is top tier for me and seems timeless. I really like the characters in Aliens, with Hudson being one of my favourite quotable characters in any movie. I created a windows 98 theme back in the day with his lines as the various notification sounds - no, I really didn’t have anything else to do. The queen battle is also a favourite of my scenes.

Sorry if you have already said, but was this the theatrical or special edition?

Imho one of the greatest sequels and action movies ever made and Sigourney Weaver is amazing in it. Thank god we had Jennifer Lawrence who paved the way for Characters like Ellen Ripley. ;) (couldnt resist) Ellen Ripley is a fantastic example of how a female lead in an action movie should be written. Strong and tough but als with flaws and weaknesses. I think you dont need to compare both Movies. one is a suspense/horror Movie and the other is more a Action Movie with some suspense. Both are great in there own way. One suggestion, you should really watch the Directors Cut if you can. Its worth it! Anyway, thanks for your reaction.

I have some comments about the different versions but I dunno if you want to wait and potentially see that version for yourself. I mostly was going to bring up one major detail added, not go through scene-by-scene, but I figured I should check first.

Aliens I adore. Now you see why Alien Isolation was set in between Alien and Aliens as there was a pretty large time gap between Alien and Aliens of 50 years. So plenty of room for an Alien Isolation sequel lol Alien - 2122 Alien: Isolation - 2137 (Video Game) Aliens - 2179 We're introduced to the Colonial Marines so already this film is much more action focused than the slower paced thriller that was Alien. Both are extremally well done movies each having their own strengths and styles so it very much depends on which film you personally prefer. This film gave birth to a bunch of really fun Alien novels and comics to video games where you played as a Colonial Marine to Aliens Versus Predator from 1999 where you can play as a Marine, Predator, or Alien based on the amazing novels and comic books that dive more into these worlds. So it did a great job at explaining the overall universe. Also Michael Biehn plays Cpl. Dwayne Hicks in this film who you may remember as Kyle Reese from The Terminator 1984. He also appeared in some other shows and movies as well which you haven't seen. Michael also voices the character of Rex Power Colt in Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon a game that's a love letter to all 1980s to 1990s action movies. I'll link a trailer below. "Also Michael Biehn plays Cpl. Dwayne Hicks in this film who you may remember as Kyle Reese from The Terminator 1984." Yes... I said this in the reaction.

I didn't realize there were two different versions (if someone had told me in the past, I had forgotten). D+ has the theatrical.

"Ellen Ripley is a fantastic example of how a female lead in an action movie should be written." - Female action leads can be written in whatever way the creator wants to write them. You will always have people that like/dislike characters. Glad you enjoyed the reaction! And you're right, both movies are great in their own way!

kaiielle

Yeah, go ahead! I don't know that I can watch the special edition here in Canada without purchasing it. After the Terminator 2 issue, I'm always gonna opt for the version that's the most easily accessible.

I’ve definitely seen ALIENS many more times than I’ve seen ALIEN but, as I sit here now, I’d say seven times out of 10 I’d choose to watch ALIEN. In the end, I think ALIEN is a bit more successful in what it’s trying to do than ALIENS is. I think you could also make the argument Ash and MU/TH/UR are the scariest things about either of them. That said, yeah, ALIENS is great. Love it. No real reason to choose, ultimately. 🤷‍♂️

The biggest and most important detail only in the Special Edition is that it is revealed Ripley had a daughter back on Earth who was a child when she left, and in the 57 years Ripley was lost in space, her daughter died of old age. So when she finds Newt, it adds another layer to her desire to protect and care for Newt.

You also saw Vasquez (Jeanette Goldstein) in Terminator 2, playing John's foster mother, and Bishop (Lance Henriksen) in the first movie as the second main cop (you may eventually mention this in the video; it's not over yet). Michael Biehn was actually a recast, with the role originally going to actor James Remar. Remar, however, had an addiction problem and ended up not working out. Thankfully, he's since recovered and had a good career of his own.

kaiielle

Ash definitely still freaks me out and 100% the reason why I was on edge about Bishop the whole time. 😅

kaiielle

Since I had played a few hours of Alien: Isolation, I think that's why I assumed that Newt WAS Ripley's daughter, even though the name(s) didn't match from what I remembered about A:I. I forgot that A:I takes place in between the films. I'll look up that scene online. Honestly, it would have probably made things clearer for me, but ultimately not a big deal to miss out on. And I didn't recognize Vasquez or Bishop... just Hicks!

Jason Chirevas

And yet one of my favorite parts of ALIENS is when Newt is getting sucked out of the ship at the end and calls out to Bishop, who, despite being rended in twain, is able to save her. 🙂

And i never said everyone should write it the same way, i just said it is a great example how to write a character, regardless if male or female, can be written. Of course every creator can write his characters as she/he wants, in the end they are her/his characters but there is a reason why People often refer to Characters and Movies how great they are written. Anyway, i never wanted to come across that i think there is only one way to write a character. I just think Ripley is a great example but there are others that a very different and still fantastic, i.e. Furiosa from Mad Max Fury Road or Natasha Romanoff from the MCU.

kaiielle

Totally understood and thanks for clarifying! It was the word "should" in your sentence that made it come across that way to me. Completely agree with what you have said here though. And it reminded me of this. I had an unfortunate experience a while back when I was playing Mass Effect with a female Shepard who I had created with masculine attributes (physical) and they were pretty aggressive with me about her appearance. "She doesn't look or act like a badass, she should look like and act like ___ to be badass." Because I was playing her Renegade, the personality type was more aggressive as well. And they were throwing out examples like Wonder Woman and Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn. I replied saying that a woman doesn't need to look beautiful to be badass. And you've got tons of folks on the other side of it too. I have seen so much discourse from people online who have a problem when women don't look or act masculine enough in an action movie. Like any bit of nice hair and makeup somehow affects the actions of said person.

The original Alien is perhaps my all-time favorite horror movie...so I think I gotta go with that one. But Aliens is ranked right up there with the best sequels of all-time: The Empire Strikes Back; Godfather Part 2; The Dark Knight; Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo; and Terminator 2 (James Cameron gives good sequels...although, I still haven't seen the Avatar sequel...but hey).

For me it comes down to sentimental attachment. I first watched Aliens when I was 6 or 7, and it was one my favorite movies to watch on repeat as a kid. In fact I also watched the 3rd & 4th Alien movies before I ever watched the OG Alien 😆 No need to choose a “favorite” both Alien & Aliens are excellent, and stand on their own just fine.

Perry Campbell

Great reaction, this my favorite Alien, it Mens favorite because of the action. To me the next 2 alien movies were terrible. Just my opinion. The comics had better story.
