Overpopulation - The Human Explosion Explained

In a very short amount of time the human population exploded and is still growing very fast. Will this lead to the end of our civilization? Check out https://ourworldindata.org by Max Roser!

Great video! I am not as worried about population growth now. I also noticed you used a different animation style! Is this a one-off or are you going to continue with this? I think I preferred the style from "A New History for Humanity - The Human Era". Thank you for all your hard work on this, you always produce beautiful videos!

Haha, wait, I was expecting another prediction of disaster as you're wont to do! :P

But, seriously, great video :)

So uplifting! Somedays I just wonder if humanity has given up and just expects an apocalyptic future. Also, while this video is stylistically yours, I'm noticing more details in the transitions and the characters. All very nice!

Really awesome video. I've been interested in overpopulation recently, this summed it up really well!

Yeah this is unfortunately inaccurate. 3/5 children die in north Africa before age 10 and its still overpopulated. Overpopulation is a thing and it's destroying entire cultures.

Did you watch the video Paul?

Wonderful video, thanks!

It's great to hear optimism, but I'm a little skeptical. What is considered overpopulated isn't a static number, it is relative to the environment and available resources to support that population. What we call stable is dependent on energy availability and infrastructure and our current climate. If any of these conditions change then what is considered a stable population will change as well, so despite this information I think it's wise to be concerned since if we're at population capacity then we're in a very fragile position where LOTS of people are at risk of being unsupported should any of those factors change a little bit. As always though, production quality is second to none and it was a pleasure to watch and think about.

Great video, thank you! :)

I love how eating bugs is presented as a part of future life (6:08). Quite probably will be.

Thank you especially much for this video. While I maintain a certain level of skepticism about overpopulation being a myth (my faith in human intelligence as a general institution is not boundless) it is encouraging to hear there is a plausible and rational reason for predicting an ultimate end to the growth cycle. This is reassuring in a way that blindly saying "technology will solve our problems" is not. After all, technology is not a push button solution. It takes plenty of time to research, invent, manufacture and deploy any new technological solution. If we were in a race against perpetual exponential growth, sooner or later we would lose the race. But if, as this video suggests, there is a foreseeable end to the growth cycle, this leaves me considerably more hopeful.

At first I wasn't completely sure about the new look. But I think I love it now. I also want you to know that I cancelled my WoW subscription and tripled my pledge to you instead ;) Merry Christmas!

That sounds made up. Under-5 mortality (which is what usually gets reported) is below 15% even in the worst African countries and between 5-10% in most of North Africa: https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/child-mortality?tab=map&year=2013 It seems implausible that mortality between ages 6-10 would be four times higher than that .

2021-07-09 16:19:25 Very reassuring! I've known about pieces of this argument before, but seeing the whole thing put together like this is great. I guess the next question would be whether the natural peak of our population growth strains Earth's carrying capacity.

I have worried about overpopulation before and I never thought that it would eventually slow down. Thanks Kurzgesagt, for making me aware of this!
