NEW VIDEO: Building a Marsbase is a Horrible Idea: Let’s do it!

Humans love to explore. Strangely enough even horrible places – like Mars. Let’s see how building a Mars base could work and how insanely nerve-wracking exactly it would be.

so great

Where do you ship posters from? Fingers crossed for inside EU so you don't have to pay absurd amount of cash to get the posters :)

I'm not sure if this was explicitly your point but it seems to make the most sense to do the vast majority of this robotically before any humans arrive. It's not clear to me what the benefits are of having humans present at all for phase 1.

Great video! I would love to learn about how someone terraforms a planet, assuming we have the power of a Dyson sphere behind us.

ANTIcarrot

Sorry, but the script for this video is mostly nonsense. 1) The sane and obvious approach is not going to the surface first, but setting up shop on one or more Martian moons, and duplicate the lunar facilities first. 2) If we have nuclear reactors on the ground, then we'll have nuclear engines in space, and it's wrong to say we'll only have two narrow launch windows. 3) If we have an established a base on the moon, we've done this before, and have already solved many of the problems. 4) I question whether it is likely that the first attempts to settle will really consist of a dozen people and a couple of capsules. I think you're underestimating the sale quite a bit.

Love it, and this is the video that made me finally realize you have a Patreon, so here I am! I'd love to see a similar video for cloud cities on Venus, I've always been fascinated by the idea

Hans Eriksson

Sorry, but "obvious" is very often in the eye of the beholder. Having decent gravity make a lot of stuff easier, i.e. go for the planet, not the moons.

Miy Eterp

PLEASE MAKE A WHAT IF SCENARIO WHEN WE MAKE FIRST CONTACT WITH ALIENS?!

I like this video

Wayfarer

Any chance of getting a video on O'Neill cylinders? They seem like a better next step in space colonization after a moon base instead of a Mars colony. Many of the main drawbacks of a Mars colony can be more easily addressed (e.g. normal gravity, solar power, close to Earth, etc.)

Dear God Mars Sucks. I thought itd be much easier going here Lets focus on the Moon bases first... at least we can run home to momma if we need to

Cass. Wyvern

Now that you've done Mars, let's see one where we terraform Venus now! Kim Stanley Robinson postulated a very interesting way to do it in his book 2312. Prerequisites include the space elevator, mass drivers, and self replicating machines capable of lunar disassembly, kind of like in the Dyson swarm video disassembling Mercury. Poor Dione. Oh, and a moon base. Of course, more solar system infrastructure, asteroid bases/ships, and Mars bases are always helpful. As for a magnetic field, that's a hard one. Perhaps surface planetary superconducting rings that use higher temperature materials that still are superconductors like hydrogen sulfide? (-70C vs -200C). Oh, I'm sorry, I just really like space stuff!

Mike

Yessss!! I keep telling people, the moon will have to be our first Outpost in space. There's so much we can achieve from the Moon, a moon base is required for a Mars base.

Teevee

I keep wondering why people want a self sustainable colony on Mars when we already struggle to make a self sustainable colony in Antarctica... and Antarctica is easier.

I just love your video! Can you finish Immune System II?

Did you forgot to make a video about black dwarf as told in red dwarf video.

The facts are very useful.

what about a gas planet base?

Chawanat

But "MARS" is a rocky planet,

Hudson Polan

you will sink into the core of a gas planet
