Hi everyone, it's Rich here. We're starting to prepare for filming DF Direct Weekly #111, which means we're getting our topic list together. Definitely on the cards will be reaction to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - and perhaps we can finally close the door for good on whether it is 'too big for Switch'.

Depending on whether I can make it from my current location, I'll be joining the show too to discuss the Asus ROG Ally in as much depth as I can. This trip has also been an interesting exercise in relocating my working environment elsewhere without having to take a mid-tower PC and a big bunch of devices with me - which I might bore you about if you're not careful.

But here's the part where we need your input! What topics would you like us to cover? What questions do you have? All being well, there's a textbox below this post for you to deliver your inputs so have at it!

If Richard Leadbetter from 2027 came through a time warp (having revised DF's temporal prime directive) and told you that Intel Arc had overtaken AMD Radeon as second place in the discrete GPU market (but had no way of showing proof) and then went back to his own time, would you believe him?

On the subject of OT2, why do HD-2D games run on such low resolutions on Switch despite the visual simplicity*. I have once joked that if you play them on a Switch Lite that they are actually SD-2D due to the low resolution being even lower when handheld. *I say this in a good way, OT2 on PC/PS5 is extremely beautiful.

When will we finally see a woman (or anyone not male) on a DF Direct?

Not really a question but more of a request, is there any chance I can have dlss features in my games so I can use my expensive rtx gpu as intended? Thanks

When they start existing, know of any YouTube channels with girls doing technical deep dives on video games with charts and explanations of how the tech works?

With pc ports and Xbox first party releases being as bad as they are lately, do you think Sonys lead will be extended further this generation? I recently switched to ps5 after redfalls flop and hearing Phils disheartening interview. I can imagine pc players are getting fed up as well, not to mention gpu prices soaring.

Hi there! On PC, titles such as A Plague Tale: Requiem exhibit very little to no shader comp stutter, while other titles have virtually nothing but. We've seen remedies to the latter recently through shader precaching in menus, which Plague Tale does not appear to have. Is there any reason that games couldn't do what Plague Tale did? What exactly did it do to pull it off?

This is maybe a newcomer question, but why is it that using an external framerate cap (like RTSS) is usually preferable to any framerate limiter that exists in-game? I'm not questioning it, I can see the difference myself, I've become a religious RTSS user. But why is that so consistently the case? What causes the in-game solutions to be less reliable?

Hello DF crew! I among many others I’m sure have been eagerly waiting for a Switch successor as the technical limitations are growing more painful. I held out hope for a while that Nintendo would release a new console along side Tears of the Kingdom. Obviously we are not getting that but do you think Nintendo missed an opportunity? I know for me, I would jump on the chance to play the new Zelda at a higher fidelity.

Just curious if you’ve ever considered doing more coverage on the sound design aspects of games. I feel some games deserve some recognition there despite being a flop in other regards (the Last Of Us comes to mind as having great environments and settings). Conversely there seem to be some endemic issues that could do with #stutterstuggle like attention, specifically things like cutscene audio/video sync being almost universally horrific lately, at least on PC. Just me?

netherrealm gave the ue3 engine an extreme makeover for their games (since mk9). according to rumors they switched to ue4 for mk1(2). do you think they can add the same customised features? do they even need to?

Good morning, Digital Foundry. This question is for John... John, I enjoyed your review of 'Tears of the Kingdom'. Towards the beginning of your video, you noted how 'Tears of the Kingdom' is a direct sequel to 'Breath of the Wild' in a similar manner to how 'Majora's Mask' was a direct sequel to 'Ocarina of Time.' But I think it's worth pointing out that 'Majora's Mask' came out approximately one year after 'Ocarina of Time.' The development for 'Tears of the Kingdom' has taken approximately as long as the game it was built on/around. Without spoiling things for us...what have you seen, John, in 'Tears of the Kingdom' that has made you go "Ah, I see why this took 6 years to develop." Maybe it's the sheer number of classic dungeons? Maybe it's just the fact it runs on the Switch at all? Keep up the great work, Digital Foundry, thank you!

Hey DF ! Is QA a thing anymore ? I get the feeling "big" companies just let games out in the wild, survey the thousants of complaints , and go it from there ? It is much cheaper isn't it ? A propos ... High fidelity vs high framerate on PC ? I choose the latter , but is this feasable in the near future where attaining 60 FPS is questionable.... enjoying older games @4K 180Hz is amazing

Is there any possibility to dual-boot the ASUS ROG Ally to run both Windows and Steam OS? Does DF have any plans to try?

Leftisthominid

Given that current PC ports are making Alex want to rip out his hair, has he considered going bald like Richard or Ollie or very-short-haired like John?

Mr Bespoke

One for the DF Retro, Will John be taking a look at the Zuiki X68000 Z Mini at some point in the foreseeable future? Thanks and keep up the awsome work.

About a month ago, there was a Nintendo engineer who put forth a proposal for a new Vulkan extension called VK_EXT_shader_object that aims to eliminate vulkan pipelines altogether. He goes into a lot of detail about the "why" behind it and from what I can tell, this may help a lot with #StutterStruggle, at least for the Vulkan backend. Could you guys perhaps explain a bit about this and tell me if I am I right to believe in a stutter-free future? or should I not hold my breath? I am very curious what the DF team thinks about this. here's the proposal if you'd like to read it. i found it very interesting. https://github.com/KhronosGroup/Vulkan-Docs/blob/main/proposals/VK_EXT_shader_object.adoc

Hi all, Over the last three or four years I've noticed a kind of "look" that I think is shared by a number of games, and I'm wondering if this is just me being weird or if other people also notice the same patterns. This is not related to art-style, but I believe it's a similarity in the way that certain effects and rendering features appear to my eye. I'd describe it as a combination of overall image softness, a loss of fine details on textures, and multiple kinds of artefacting that exist just on the edge of perception. They usually become noticeable on fine detail or when the camera moves and the motion blur kicks in. I want to call this a "Stochasty look". The most recent notable examples that stood out to me were Redfall, Atomic Heart and High on Life. But it's also shared by games on other engines too, like Cyberpunk 2077, or to some extent Metro Exodus, as well as a range of very low budget indie titles I've played that run on Unity. Is this a real thing, and if so, what causes it? Is it something to do with default implementations of anti aliasing or motion blur in certain engines, or is my brain just connecting the dots on some kind of unhinged rendering conspiracy board?

is it possible nintendo's next-gen console will feature tensor cores? if so, besides allowing for dlss integration - how else could they be used? might devs be allowed to access the tensor cores via nintendo's development api for large improvements to in-game ai? i'm imagining an open world rpg where NPC's can produce unique dialogue based on some kind of language processing model that takes character/personality traits into account. is something like this even feasible? i would love to hear the crew's thoughts!

Dear Digital Foundry Team, new subscriber here. First - let me thank you all for your great content and work! It is really refreshing to have people caring so much about games, but at the same time show the right amount of respect for developers while maintaining curiosity, integrity, scrutiny and calling out when something is 'great' and also 'not so great'. In that regards, I started playing 'The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom' and noticed a really strange situation, which is bothering the hell out of me. Currently I'm wondring whether there is someone out there, that can confirm the issue or if my personal copy of the game is just broken. Given the nature of the issue, I wasn't able to find anything by searching the web, as the search terms 'weapon', 'switching', 'delay', 'performance issue' certainly show lots of results but none for the issue I'm having. I'll try my best to discribe it: As we know, one can hold down the 'right arrowkey' on the left Joy-Con to open the weapons quick-menu and switch between weapons using the analog-stick on the right Joy-Con. In 'Breath of the Wild' this weapon switching was blazing fast. In 'Tears of the Kingdom' however there seems to be a significant amount of delay when switching to a different weapon, as there is some kind of 'lock-in' mechanism. From what I can tell a 'lock-in' sound is playing and it seems that until the sound finished playing the complete game pauses for a brief moment. When you just briefly open and close the weapon-menu without changing the weapon, it doesn't need to 'lock-in' and instantly jumps back to the game. Also the materials-menu switches a lot faster, since this kind of 'lock-in-sound' isn't present there. I checked the game and nintendo switch for updates and am currently running version 1.1.0 of the game - system version is 16.0.3. I also deleted and re-downloaded the game - but sadly the issue persists. The FPS dips in the game really do not bother me - that is fine - but this seemingly unnecessary pausing of the game - to finish playing a sound - I simply don't get it. My question would be - can you confirm this situation? And what can we do to bring this to nintendo's attention? I was playing 'Breath of the Wild' in the run up to 'Tears of the Kingdom' and therefore noticed this difference in behavior right away. I really hope this can be fixed in a patch, since it is driving me nuts and especially because the game itself is so amazing. Thanks so much for listening and keep up the great work!

I have a question which is kind of related to the constant stream of unfinished AAA, both on console and especially on PCs. Is there any real impact on sales of getting a half finished product out? I know Hanlon's razor, but the more unoptimized game I see getting release, the more I get the feeling that their apology letter is already written and ready to go along with their unfinished game. Maybe the vast (silent) majority of user buys their game don't mind, or even worst, we've all become numb to the state of the gaming industry. tl;dr do you think there's sometime a bit of a calculated risk to getting games out early, in which the sales/date of release will compensate any damage made to the brand ?

Hi guys, thanks so much for all the awesome work you do! Every one of you is a shining beacon of positivity in my life! How important is proper screen calibration to the development and enjoyment of games? Are any of your screens calibrated, either using a reference photo or proper calibration hardware? Why or why not?
