Hi everyone - it's that time again. Tomorrow, we'll be recording the new DF Direct Weekly and it's likely to be Rich, John and Alex discussing various topics such as the announcement of Microsoft's developer_direct show, Microsoft's notion of Xbox as a 'carbon aware console' and any other news stories that catch our eye.

Truth is, it's been a quiet week, so if there are any specific stories or even general topics you'd like us to discuss - do make your suggestions!

In the meantime, it's all about supporter Q+A, so get your questions in below! Thanks!

Can we talk about the absolute state of mouse input in modern PC games? High on Life, Uncharted, Gotham Knights, Monster Hunter Rise, Ghost Wire Tokyo, Evil Dead: The Game, Resident Evil: Village, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Midnight Suns are just a few examples from 2022 ALONE released with mouse smoothing or acceleration. Most are UE4 titles. I could go on but it's too depressing. I think input should be part of the technical review process for a PC release. Do you agree?

Question for John - Do you plan on cross shopping any QD OLEDs from Samsung or Sony when looking for a new TV? The technology seems to give more brightness and truer colors so maybe it's a better budget option than going LG G3. Also given how the feature set has seemed to degrade from LG OLEDs in recent models I wonder if the competition has caught up on features like VRR or BFI. Bonus question - will you be jumping to Micro LED when it's available at non-insane prices?

With the news from the ERA that 89.5% of games sales in the UK were digital. Do we need to think about how the digital sales model can be improved? For instance - what if digital games could be resold on a digital marketplace - with some of the revenue going to the developers - this would be a better situation for them than physical resales - and a better digital situation for consumers.. There's also the issue of permanence / historic function - perhaps all digital games could be 'physicalised' at shops - You login to a machine that transfers your digital game to a physical copy.. I think there's a lot of room for ideas here that could find a new and better middle ground.. Essentially we'd all like the speed and convenience of downloads while retaining the perks of physical media (resale, historic permanence, optional limited edition extras, etc.) Any ideas?

What's your best/worst gaming-related package delivery story? Mine is probably when my Xbox Series X was delivered to the wrong address with the delivery company insisting it has been delivered correctly. Amazingly, it wasn't stolen, but it ended up being left out for days and days in rainstorms. Someone eventually checked the address on this box sitting out and let me know, and after draining the Series X (literally) of about a pitcher full of water, and letting it dry for about a week next to a heater, it now works flawlessly ever since, for more than a year. It's named (rather aptly I feel) as "The Prodigal Son Returned" in it's settings. :P

More of an off-topic question, but has DF ever considered doing an 80s/90s style sitcom intro montage for at least one DF Direct? I personally, think it would be a funny surprise. Back on topic, do you see Frame-rate independent camera movement (ie asynchronous time warp), combined with frame generation, becoming a practical way forward for games? As hardware manufacturing costs continue to grow in price, I assume we won't be able to brute force our way to the generational visual leaps consumers often expect every console cycle.

Are the Jedi survivor recommended specs interesting to you at all? The recommended considers a 2070 & 6700XT equivalent

What does Digital Foundry think of producing the weekly DF Direct in 4k? The host recordings can remain at 1080p, however, clips, graphics and multiple host views would be at 2160p. Would the increased workflow time be worth it?

Hi DF, I mainly use my PC to work in indie game developer projects as well as do some gaming, and I think my CPU needs an upgrade, I'm currently using a 3600. My eyes is on the 5800x3D but I'm not sure, what CPU do you recommend, my budget for a CPU is $400 max.

Now that all of you have HDR displays, what do you guys think of the current situation of HDR gaming, especially on PC? AFAIK Windows 11 introduced features such as a HDR calibration tool and HDR quick switching via hotkey that are quite useful. HGiG though is still a bit of a mess. We need more TV manufacturers to support it. While DV is nowhere to be seen in gaming, HDR10+ will be adopted by Nvidia. As for games using it, we'll have to see? Some new HDR content or special from you would be nice, but I guess it's not worth the extra time required working on it.

Bonjour gang, John in your best games of 2022 video at 27:00 you apologized for the judder caused by recording G-sync 120Hz. I cringed, because I'm facing similar issues while recording Forza Horizon 5 at 1440p120 native G-sync thru nVidia ShadowPlay. I've tried G-sync/Vsync/Adaptive 60/120... nothing seems to work. 🤬 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcstTIoUb7k What software/hardware solutions do you use/recommend to record PC content?

Will someone please explain the ps5 liquid metal drama to me? Has sony made any statements about it?

I was wondering what you guys thought of some of the new 3D tech that was on display at CES such as Acer’s SpatialLabs TrueGame 3D Ultra mode. Personally, I had a blast in the PS3 era playing games like God of War Origins Collection, Killzone 3, and Uncharted 3 on a 3D TV. I also think Nintendo loves a good gimmick and I could totally see a Nintendo Switch 3D. Could new technological innovations such as eye tracking pave the way for 3D to make a comeback? At least for gaming?

Can you provide a reality check for all those who mistakenly think that PSVR2 getting jailbroken to work with PC will be easy "because it has a USB-C cable"? Sony has multiple ways of making it not compatible: custom communication protocol, traffic encryption, etc.

Simplex

It's blown out of proportion and there are already retraction about it because of a misunderstanding/mistranslation from French.

Happy New Year DF Crew! Ubisoft is apparently scaling back the next Assassin's Creed game because fans want a "more intimate scale" in newer entries. Could this mean there's hope that huge maps devoid of meaningful content may start to fade away?

I did enjoy the video on PC ports from Alex "Mr Ray Tracing" Battaglia, but do you see it mostly falling on deaf ears and is it really a decision in the end to publishers and producers for the majority of these? You have to believe the porting teams want to add alot of this but are possibly hamstrung by those above them to get the games out quickly.

Happy New Year, DF! Taking the RTX 4070Ti as an example, when the specifications were first revealed back when the 4080 12GB briefly existed, there was immediate hubbub online and comparisons of die size, bus width, etc. to lower-tier 30-series GPUs. Does this sort of comparison have merit? At the end of the day, even with the cut-down nature of the GPU, we are getting RTX 3090/Ti-like performance at RTX 3080 prices. Should I care that the GPU has a 192-bit bus width? Does any of this have wider implications on the industry and GPUs of the future? P.S. Really enjoyed watching your content over the holidays! Thank you all for all you do. The FFXIII revisit and recent PC ports videos are standouts for me.

13700k would be a brilliant choice if it fits in your budget. AM5 is not really cost effective at the moment, and 5800x3d is not the strongest multi core chip, which I assume would be important to game development workloads.

I don’t play games with keyboard and mouse, but is mouse acceleration really that annoying for you?

Anna Rae

Hiya DF. What do you think current #stutterstruggle PC games will look like in 10 years with new hardware? Will it be an undesirable smudge in PC gaming’s past? Or will we be able to brute force the stutters on these “retro” PC games from 2021?

TheCollector

What impact do you think AI tech such as Chat GPT will have on open world games such as Cyberpunk with many hundreds/thousands of NPCs. How about MMOs? Do you have any info on whether these models can be processed locally or can it only be natural if based in the cloud?

Anonymous

Hope it’s not to late to ask this: Hey ya’ll! It feels like we are officially in an era where upscaling technology and soon AI/machine learning are a must in gaming especially as higher resolution screens, 100+ frame rates, and raytracing become the norm. Do you think we’ll see a mid-console refresh where the only change is better raytracing and machine learning tech? Do you think PCs will see discrete cards for raytracing or other tech in the future letting graphics card to focus on rasterization? And finally, what do you think (or want) the next advancement in gaming will be?

I'd also be curious to hear John's opinion on alternatives to LG OLEDs - whether it's QD-OLED or just OLED from another brand. Thing is I'm guessing they don't have BFI?

Anonymous

The ones from Samsung and Sony do support BFI according to RTINGS, but they have the same limitations as newer LG panels (limited to 60hz, can't do VRR at the same time). I think this puts them on an equal playing field as LG, but I don't know how you figure out if they're "better" without testing it out in person. Most websites barely even mention these features. Even users on BlurBusters and AVforums refer to John as the main expert in BFI when it comes to gaming haha.

Can shaders be compiled before launching a game? For example when the game is downloaded
