It's that time again! We'll be filming the next DF Direct Weekly tomorrow and topics up for discussion include the new PS5 revision dismantled by Austin Evans, the PS5 1440p update, rumours of a Metal Gear Solid remaster of some description and some of the more interesting demos from SAGE 2022. Assuming Alex is available, we'll also be discussing XeSS as we hope the full content for that will be out by the time you get to see the Direct!

So that's the general lie of the land for the show this week, but of course, we want your questions - so let's be having them!

Now that Richard has switched to Unreal Engine per DF Direct 56, what will be done to mitigate stutter? Will he be precompiling his shaders? Could VRR help? (on capture?)

On my PS5, I primarily play PlayStation first/second party games (and Unreal Engine stutter struggle games). I now have my PS5 hooked up to a 1440p 165Hz VRT monitor (and I have the Beta firmware). I have been wondering, which would be better to use now at 1440p, Performance RT modes or 40Hz modes?

For games such as Elden Ring where Valve has made optimizations on the Steam Deck, do those optimizations carry-over to regular PCs running SteamOS (or other versions of Linux)?

Has gaming as a culture become too corporate? Microsoft and Sony are becoming bigger than ever and while they both are important topics to discuss, we’ve resorted to news stories about them whining at each other about exclusivity and market control. This is not what games are about. Is this news cycle simply a result of the drought of games we’re in for the next few months, or are games going to continue to go the way of Hollywood, where the talented artists, programmers, engineers etc become absorbed by the monolith of the corporation, even more than they already are?

Seeing as John and Oliver agreed that T-LOO was worthy of a remake 9 years on, do you think T-LOO P-2 would be worth remaking for 2029 hardware? Or do you think it's just too early to tell? Thanks!

What are some of your favorite freeware/shareware games? Nothing "free with in app purchase" or retail games given away as a free promo on epic, ps+, etc. Examples: OpenTTD, doom1.wad, Ur Quan Masters.

What would the game industry be like if sega was still producing games consoles?

Why wouldn't Sony look to compete with Call of Duty by reviving SOCOM instead of continuing a back and forth with Microsoft regarding their pending acquisition of Activision? Since they own Bungie now, couldn't;t they use their knowledge to make a proper competitor they can build upon? SOCOM's brand awareness is still there among the general gaming public. I find this back and forth between them is not accomplishing anything when Sony should have been hard at work from a while ago to create their own game to compete with Call of Duty. Keep up the awesome work as always DF Crew. Thank you!

From watching John's conversations on prior Directs, it's clear that CRT s offer the best motion clarity and black levels closely followed by OLEDs. However unfortunately for many people these are both very costly, especially going into a cost of living crisis. What's the most OLED-like technology that is more affordable? What gives the best 'bang for the buck'?

I’d be interested in DF’s answer. From what I understand it’s resources, Bungie have 800 or so people and AB have over 3000 people directly working on COD not to mention all the support staff and outsourcing. COD isn’t even that good of a game I find, the last few have been pretty average but it’s got a well known brand name an annual release date. It’s not so easy to replicate.

I didn't ask a question for a long time so let me ask two: 1) are you excited for a very promising Half-Life 2 VR mod (looks almost native VR) and if yes, will you cover the open beta that launches early September? 2) How viable do you think is 9700K in late 2022, especially regarding true next gen games that were not developed with a Jaguar abacus in mind? Thanks for all your great work!

Will there ever be customizable settings for console games as we have on PC? Seems to me like you could have some quality presets like you do now, but more advanced options for people who want them. It looks like Saints Row's options try to get there without actually going all the way.

Quake 2 RTX was a really cool way to “remaster” a game (rendering everything by casting rays). What are the top 10 classic games you would want to see get this sort of treatment?
