What should have been a celebration of gaming with the arrival of Gamescom 2022 is marred by a bunch of bad news - including price rises for PlayStation 5 in multiple territories that are not the United States of America and the mooted arrival of Denuvo DRM for... Nintendo Switch? As John and Rich seem to continually remind us the episode... it's not great.

As far as price rises in recent memory. Sony or a few of them increased the prices in Canada in 2014ish when the Canadian dollar weakened significantly. More recently the price on the X/S in the Indian market was increased twice by a cumulative 8% as late as last month. However if this was an offical price hike or an increase by the offical local reselling partner to offset the strength of the USD.

I don't see the "if the competition were doing likewise" as a valid argument against this considering Microsoft is a far, far more wealthy company who can absorb the heavy inflation and other economic factors leading to this like nothing and Nintendo is using ancient cheap tech internally on all their Switchs.

I don't think this is a Jim Ryan originating decision ultimately since Sony have been increasing all sorts of other electronics across other divisions because of the recent economic struggles

PS5 was already 599 euro in Norway at launch, 499 euro for the digital one. Now the few that actually sells it have it at 1000 euro and 900 euro respectivaly. In Norway they always add VAT on most thing regardless of price set. So 499 dollars at launch would always come at 599 dollars in Norway. Xbox not that in demand here so it sold at 549 dollars at launch and still is. (Always in stock)

On the 7th-gen refresh question- You have to keep in mind the non-gaming historical context. One of the reasons that generation stretched out as long as it did was a major financial crash right in the middle of it. A mid-gen refresh would have meant asking people to buy new consoles in 2009-2010, when people were losing their homes and savings.

Comparing Jim Ryan to Don Mattrick was brutal. I think the PS5 price increase is a shame, but I do partly feel in certain parts of the world it'll be put to one side so to speak quite quickly. I'm more worried about how to heat the house over winter than what is ultimately an expense on a non-necessity. People have much bigger fish to fry.

I know Linus Tech Tips YT channel did a whole thing on transporting game keys from games that were already purchased from a hackable switch onto the Deck. Not piracy but another way to implement emulation

Price went up but build costs went down! They shrunk the heatsink again. Just found out. Need to see a teardown but I hope you bring this up next episode

How would you feel if you knew they also lowered the build cost which was just found out yesterday. They shrunk the heatsink and copper is with $$. Still... You're right lol, Mattrick was an evil evil man who managed to take the top seat in gaming by money earned and in basically 3 decisions he completely tarnished the brand badly enough that it's JUST coming around and Phil Spencer has been killing it since he took over. So that's just unimaginable levels of damage that man did if it's taken Spencer and EVERYTHING he's done for the brand since taking over and even allowing RetroArch to stay up on the store for anyone to use freely and not have to pay the $20 fee... Wow. Although give Ryan time. You never know. As for heat, I use my PC and just lower my fan curves on my CPU rad and GPU fans. Of course then my electric bill goes up but it's cheaper than natural gas ATM. My LG C1 also generates tons of heat. It's absurd.
