Hey everyone, Rich here. I thought it might be interesting to compare Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered on Steam Deck up against the PlayStation 4 original - complete with the old Peter Parker, whose head never seemed to plausibly fit within the mask. What we end up with is as much a comparison of OG vs remaster, but it's interesting to note that some of the PS5 enhancements - beyond the actual remastering - do seem to be able to be retained. At 2:07, for example, there are clear signs of extended draw distance on pedestrians and traffic.

Deck settings are essentially high across the board, with medium hair quality and 8x anisotropic filtering - very close to what we're finalising on as 'optimised settings'. I've seen some people wondering about 40fps by compromising settings... well, I'm afraid that the CPU requirement is just too high. Swinging through the city even on very low settings puts you in 35-40fps territory, so it's problematic in terms of consistency. With that being the case, 30fps is the only option I'm comfortable with, so by extension, I'd like a great experience. Settings are available to be turned down to improve battery life, of course!

Bonus Material: Marvel's Spider-Man - Steam Deck vs PlayStation 4

Here's what happens when you compare Marvel's Spider-Man running with tweaked optimised PC settings on Steam Deck, stacked up against the original PlayStation 4 release. Thank you for backing the DF Supporter Program.

Steam Deck is really turning into a portable PS4, even slightly better. Who would have thought that a year ago. That's awesome!

Shame that you can't touch 60fps even if you're willing to have the lowest of settings. Gotta say though it's crazy that we can take games like this on the go I never thought I would see the day where we could theoretically sit down and play Spiderman in times square on a Steam Deck !

The remastering effort (colour grading, lighting changes) don't look like the upgrade they should have been. Multiple times the footage on the right looks more pleasant to my eyes. Interesting to see which of these changes is attributed to the steam deck settings alone

Even turning down the the newly added traffic-density and crowd density (which should affect CPU performance) to the lowest settings possible + FSR 2.0, doesn't make a stable 40 fps possible on Deck? I assume this is footage from the most recent version of the game right?

You can run it at very low settings and it'll still have issues in the city, per the post!

There goes the dream haha, slight hope they Nixxes might add even more graphical options to the game to give users the ability to run this game on lower-end hardware even better, with compromises of course ...

I hope folks don't get too carried away over what the SD is capable of. I've seen a lot of disappointed posts upset about how few games run 60/high on this thing with games that even have problems on 3090 i9 builds. It is basically portable PS4. Only slightly more powerful in a few areas, but it won't run large games like this at 60 fps. That's not been my experience nor expectation with this device. It's AAA gaming on-the-go, but there are serious limitations. Most games will run 30-40 fps with medium to high settings enabled, which is more than stellar for a mobile console with such a small screen running on a lithium-ion battery. You'll face less disappointment if your main focus is playability rather than what settings you can max out every game.

Many people don't seem to appreciate the role of the CPU - and that the Ryzen cores in the Deck are few in number, power constrained and low in clocks.

Yeah, meant extra settings to scale down the game even more in that regard (like allowing more pop-in etc.), but maybe then the experience is so severely impacted, that it is not worth it

At 6:27 On PS4, Kingpin is behind some glass and appears cartoon-y. The plants behind also him are also way less detailed compared to steam deck. Spidey is up close. PS4 has him blurred with the focus on kingpin. on steam deck you see details on both characters - though the glass does give Insomnica/Nixxes an excuse to go lower res or w/e for kingpin in this shot. One last note is that on my tv - samsung 7000 series - colors seem washed out on ps4 while looking vibrant and great on the steam deck side of the screen.
