Coming This Week on Digital Foundry (Week 23, 2022) (Patreon)
Content
Well, hello there - it's Rich here with minutes of the Digital Foundry #content meeting. Quite a lot going on that we're really excited to share, so let's dive straight in.
* John has finally completed his PlayStation 3: The 1080p Dream video and I've just finished reviewing it for quality control. This weighs in at three hours and 12 minutes of content and I watched it through breaking only for the content meeting! Truly amazing work and the kind of DF Retro content that simply would not be possible without the Retro support tier. 85 games tested! After a short breather, John's also going to be looking at Mario Strikers: Battle League Football on Switch, and possibly the new Horizon Forbidden West patch with the latest iteration of the performance mode.
* Audi has yet more content for Retro tier supporters, as the Retro Q+A should also arrive this week and he's threatening/promising that it'll be the longest one yet.
* Rich (ie me) has already teased you about the From Software 30fps patch situation. The full content will cover all of From's PS4 offerings up to Elden Ring, with some background on what consistent frame-pacing actually is. We want to show why it's important and how bad it is when things go wrong. This isn't a 'DF nit-pick' but the most basic thing about how a 30fps game should present.
* Alex is working on the God of War FSR 2.0 video that everyone wants to see! Beyond that, although not certain, a Diablo Immortal video may be in the offing.
* Oliver will be delivering his Steam Deck vs Xbox Series S head-to-head - a showdown between the lowest-end RDNA 2/Zen 2 console APUs. Just how close can the handheld get to Series S factoring in the inherent reduction in screen resolution? Beyond that, two projects are potentially in the offing: Steam Deck as a docked console (and how TSSAA techniques including FSR 2.0 can help) and potentially a look at AC Origins and AC Odyssey now that both are boosted to 60fps.
* Will polishes off his RTX 3090 Ti and Ryzen 7 5800X3D reviews this week and digs into micro SD cards for Steam Deck. Does higher performance actually matter and how do Micro SDs compare to the internal SSD?
* Tom was due back from vacation today but it somewhat under the weather. Once restored to full power, the last polish can finally be added to Nvidia Reflex video plus work can conclude on the Rebellion Switch piece.
A bit of a heads-up: we're likely to record DF Direct Weekly a touch earlier this week and will endeavour to get it to supporters ASAP. The Microsoft/Bethesda presser 'drops' on Sunday, so the Direct will go live earlier and we'll record a new one specifically about the show first thing on Monday.
Any pivots? Well, with Geoffcon promising some wurld prm'ears, who knows? Personally though, after finishing the From video, I fancy overclocking the PlayStation 3. DF's campaign to make 2022 the Year of the Triple must continue! In the meantime, have a great week!
