Rightfully receiving a critical mauling at launch, we thought it was high time that we revisited the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy Definitive Edition - and we're glad that we did. While artistic decisions are still somewhat questionable, there's not doubt at all that we've seen genuine, profound improvements across the board. Oliver Mackenzie has the story.

Fantastic follow up and I'm so glad someone else finally mentioned the original Xbox games. Of course I had all 3 on PS2 because they had an exclusive period but the original Xbox versions were fantastic. Better textures, a GPU that could actually run pixel and vertex shaders, faster loading, engines that were modeled, car rims that had depth and weren't flat textures... HANDS! HANDS no mitt's lol. I loved it. I'm sure they couldn't use that version because it used custom API calls made by nVidia and that's why we have seen the horrible mobile ports used for updates but surely they could have used their own art and meshes then switched out the custom API for something modern that looks better... I just don't get it. I wish there was a way to play the original Xbox versions at 60fps. Hell maybe you can, I haven't looked into that scene in a while although if I want I can play them as they were... I have an original Xbox hooked up in my bedroom and I have the games on disc... But they may be saved to the HDD 😃 which makes them load even faster. Oh original Xbox... You were fantastic. John.. you need to do an Xbox DF Retro and talk about From Software on original xbox. Otogi 1 & 2 show seeds of Demon Souls and the visuals at the time were top tier plus the games had that From Software difficulty though not to the extreme we saw later lol. Oh and with component cables they still look good! Whaaaat?! Again, fantastic video Oliver. Keep it up and keepem coming.

For me personally, while it's great that the frame rate has seen improvements across the board, so much damage has been done to the original artsyle and the look and feel of each game that I feel it still isn't an optimal way to play these games even if they're the only versions. I find it unfortunate that a lot of people will experience these games for the first time with this subpar release and have no other (reasonable) means of doing so. I just wish Rockstar would have actually taken the time themselves to ensure this was a high quality release at launch instead of pushing out a product that clearly wasn't ready and did not meet their (usual) standards.
